I was accepted to Boston University for Graphic Design and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the major. I was looking at this student review site and I found something that bothered me:

Is it true that you have to take sculpture, painting and drawing before you can go into graphic design??? I’ve been doing that my whole life, so I don’t see why I need it now (I just want graphic design) Is this person just talking about art foundation freshman year or what? Anyone that knows anything about the graphic design department at BU would be a great help.

I’m not sure if you have toured the School of Visual Arts, but I did and promptly fell in love. The quality of the experience there seems far superior to the myriad other art schools and programs I reviewed during the app. process. I have been accepted and I am probably going to either be a painting or art education major and do not know too much about grpahic design but here is what I (somewhat creepily) recommend: go to the college of fine arts website and then school of visual art page. On the tool bar on the left you will see a link for Student work, both graduate and undergraduate sections. Click on the graphic design links. There are specific names of art students. Try looking a few of them up on facebook, message them with a little “not trying to be creepy but I saw your work on the bu website and i thought i was fantastic…” Then ask them what they think of that quote/ their experience. Try a random sample of grad and undergrads an you will probably get a good representation of what it is like. I hope I see you there next year!
