Graphing Calculators?

I know that some colleges like UMD don't allow students to use a ti89 and their not even allowed to use calculators on the tests. Does Pitt allow students to use ti 89s in MATH 0220?

No- no type of calculator are allowed on tests. Very RARELY do teachers allow them. If they do, usually they require you to show all of your work to prove you know what you are doing.

They want to make sure that you understand the concept, and not just how to get the answer. So most likely, if you use a calculator just to get the answer, you still aren’t going to receive full points because you don’t have all the steps they are looking for. However, teachers won’t include hard math (like trying to multiply 8 times 45, divided by 6, or something crazy).

Don’t worry though. I’ve taken up to Differential Equations and passed everything without one (and no, I am NOT a super math genius either!)

Edit: I think Linear Algebra may allow calculators sometimes, but not for Calc 1, 2, or 3.
