Absolutely priceless thoughts from a young woman who sounds like a gem. Thanks so much for the link.

She does sound like a gem, and she shows what great students Tulane has. Let's hope that Tulane, like New Orleans, gets restored to its former glory soon.

Great article, and I am sure the sentiments expressed by the student make the giving of Havard and other schools all the sweeter.

Wow !

A class act, and so well said.

I think Tulane and Harvard are very lucky to have this young woman as a member of their communities. Her parents should be very proud.

Thank you, coureur. And thank you, Sarah Dawkins.

That was perfect.

How eloquent and gracious!

The essay exudes southern charm and class.

What a lovely article! And what a contrast to the whiney freshman boy who wrote in the Crimson a few weeks ago:

Great article - so happy to learn that not all of the Tulane kids are complaining about being "denied the right" to attend Harvard.

Thanks for posting this link. I totally enjoyed reading this...I love the premise of taking the service commitment back to New Orleans. Cross pollination is a good thing, yes? I have to believe that a few of the Harvard kids learned a thing or two from Sarah!!

It is very intriguing to think of an option for kids to spend a semester at a diff AMERICAN school. Get some Yalies up to Cambridge and vice versa....get some Cal Tech kids to MIT and vice versa..... what a great way to expand everyone's horizon to our own benefit.....

Maineparent:

In fact there is such a program in place; that is why various colleges were able to give the Tulane, Xavier students the status of Visiting Student. They did not have to create a new category.

Marite,
but is this program really encouraged? I do not know of a single kid who has done a semester elsewhere in the US, except for the New Orleans disaster kids......doesn't mean it isn't going on....just no one ever talks about it.... in fact, the more recent trend has been to see kids doing the semester abroad in Yugoslavia and South Africa......

I know Harvard kids who go to Princeton or Yale or Columbia, and I know a Wheaton student currently at Harvard.

maineparent - there is talk of much more of this, with kids taking a semester in New Orleans, at Tulane/Loyola/Dillard/Xavier and doing yeoman community service/Katrina rebuilding. We will have to wait to see what materializes, but it is a wonderful idea, imo.
