I just wanted to express how grateful I am that my son was able to find a fraternity full of decent young men who have accepted him despite the fact that he doesn't drink. In fact, they are supposedly allowing him to pledge alcohol-free. Frankly, I never thought I'd see that.

um... great...

Is this SigEp? Or is it one of those coed frats? (Probably not since you said "young men", but still...)

I guess that answers my question of whether or not a guy can join a frat if he doesn't drink. That's good to hear

Which frat is this?

Well, once he makes it all the way through "safely" I promise to PM interested parties to tell you which frat it is. So far the brothers have been reasonable about the pledging requirements in general. I think they told S that there woull be one occasion when he would be expected to drink, but it sounded like it might be a toast at the final ceremony or something. I'm sure if there were a medical reason or complete religious prohibition that would prevent someone from doing even that, they would probably allow it but I don't know.

The point is, S was interested in maintaining and deepening relationships with some guys who have similar interests. He just didn't want to compromise his beliefs about drinking to do that. The next hurdle will be seeing if he can get funding to cover part of his frat membership fee. He's on financial aid, and even so we're really struggling to pay for his actual education.

GFG,

Congrats on your son finding "his people" and dispelling the belief that one can stil participate in greek life as a non-drinker.

Hey Jen,

I hope that you enjoyed your first rush as a big sib.

Aw thanks Sybbie! Rush was exhausting but so rewarding in the end. Our pledges are adorable. I love my lil sis and can't wait to buy her cute stuff and make her do crazy things!

G.

I meant to write dispelling the belief that you being in a frat and raging drunk go hand in hand and the frat is no place for a sober person. I hope he enjoys his experience.

Jen,

D was off last year for rush but is now happy with her lil sis too and is excited about being a big sis .
