I was just wodnering if anyone had retaken the GRE and how they did. I was planning on retaking it in order to get into a P.h.D program as I am currently working on my masters and my university does not offer Ph.D. I was just wondering if many people had done better or worse.

Yeah, I retook them. First time I got Q:720 V:590. Abysmal...

When I retook them, I got Q:800 and V: 630

first time: 600V 750M
second time: 740V 710M

(fortunately most schools will take best from each section)

Lol...if anyone wants to feel better about their scores...this will hopefully be it!

1st time (October 2003): Q: 650; V: 430 (ACK!); A: 5.0

I went in the first time totally blind and assuming that since I didn't have to learn any math since entering college, the verbal wouldn't be too bad...oh well...

2nd time (December 2003): Q: 640; V: 540; A: 5.0

Studied for the verbal a bit more this time (well more than nothing!) and also had a problem with looking at the computer screen (one of my eyes was fully dilated due to a car accident the previous month)...I figure my excellent math grades will overshadow the quantitative score (straight A's in Calc 1-3)...also this score makes my verbal score of before look like an anomaly..

The good side...my GRE scores were better than my SATs! So...I guess I learned test taking in college better than I had in secondary school...

Edit: I'm also currently in a MS program applying for PhD programs...I decided not to take them over again and let my recommendations and personal statement/GPA/etc. do most of the talking. I think that's more important for a PhD program than proving you can take a silly test not related to your field of study...

Before putting a lot of effort and money into retaking the test, make sure that it's an important enough factor in admissions to be worth the extra effort.

I am applying to four MA programs, of which: two don't consider the GRE at all (not even a space for it on the application); one takes it into account as a minor factor when assigning TA-ships, but not admissions; and the fourth only requires that applicants reach a minimum of 400 on each section (higher performance than that does not improve admission chances).

So just make sure the work is necessary before you do it.

I think I did worse however I was lucky enough to get into a good M.A program via my letters of rec and grades. I am taking the GRE over in order to just bolster my Ph.D app a bit....I went in my first time the day after my girls defense of her first year research in a Ph.D program needles to say I was still half drunk and finished the math section in 12 minutes flat in order to avoid puking...20th percentile for life =P
