GRE retakes - uses best scores in each section ?

Dear Grads and Parents:

Does GRE report best scores in each section if one takes it multiple times, like SAT ?

Also, in general is it taboo to take it too many times ? How many times is too many?

I can only relate to SAT where, two times is generally acceptable,a third test will be pushing it, and taking a 4th time is not recommended ( looks desperate ). How is it for GREs ?

Thank you in advance for your answers !

The GRE reports all scores, so programs will see all the section scores from all the tests. I would say that similar to the SAT, a third time is pushing it. Several people take it twice, many take it only once.

I probably wouldn't suggest taking the test more than twice. It's awfully expensive, anyway.

I think most people only take it once, possibly a second time.

Thank you for your answers!

Everything is really going to depend on the school/department, as far as what scores they look at, taboos, etc. Some may only look at your best (I have seen this stated at least for a certain section). All scores prior to when you request a report are sent to schools. You may of course stagger your requests, for instance, reporting initially then waiting and taking a second time to perhaps increase your score.

so out of curiosity, when do people generally stop taking the GRE? Any acceptable cutoffs? I've heard 550V is good enough for natural sciences (and of course, a near-perfect quant score).
