Hello, guys. I'm new here.
Troubled by a high score in GRE.
I think I should probably be concerned at this point.

I just graduated from UC Davis, majoring genetics. I'm planning to apply a genetics Ph.D program.
and took the GRE test Today...I got 1600. This really troubles me.
I'm not confident at my essay part, a 1500 would probably be more suitable. (I'd be lucky to have a 4 for writing)
I thought there was no way to get all the questions for the comprehension part right.

I heared that if you have a very high score, schools expect you to have a 5.5 to 6.0 essay score;
otherwise, they think you cheated and won't consider your application.

AHHH...... Should I take the new GRE this August, and not study for it to get a lower score
to even out the 1st one? ( actually sounds like a dumb idea, but not sure how to solve this problem.)

Are you for real? You really studied that much? And I wouldn’t worry about having a perfect score, I don’t think people will think you cheated… (still not sure if you are serious)

I graduated this June, and I basically put everything on hold.
But fortunately, my supervisors in lab are very understanding.
They let me take a break from research work.

Sorry, the last part of the original post is kinda silly.
But that’s what I heard from my friends.
They said, I should have just skip the last few questions, if I feel I have got everything else right.

I didn’t do that in test, because there was no way to know which ones I GOT right
until the end of the test.

lol, this has got to be the funniest post I have ever read here. You should know that an 800 in math is very common for people in areas like math, science, econ–a high verbal score less so for most people. But people here (and elsewhere that I have read) say that the essay is not much considered and at some schools not at all.

But just be happy with you nice score. You would be CRAZY to retake and try to get a worse score. You would look suspicious to retake after that score.

Your profs should have told you not to put that much time in it–it is the least important part of your package, considering that you at least pass basic hurdles. You should have spent time on your research, a VERY important part of your package.

my daughter just took a couple practice tests the week or two before the exam. she got 650 V (93%) and 750 M (85%), not that impressive for a math/cs major (oh and 5.5 on the essay). But she knew she was a good test taker and didn’t worry about it. Also it didn’t matter much in the end.
