GRE scores problem

So I took the GRE in October and received a 580 V 520 Q

I retook it this November and received a 540 V and 630 Q.

Unfortunately, I registered under a slightly different name the second time I registered (Jimmy and James, I go by both and I forgot what I put the first time). Because of this they won't let my combine score reports so I'd have to send out two score reports to have schools see my 580 and 630.

What can I do? Should I just tell schools I got a 580 previously and upload the unofficial document to show them? I do not want to pay $46 instead of 23 per school because of something so trivial. I doubt ETS will be much help here when they can make money from it.

Just go with the second score. If the GRE breaks you, it will be because of the quant score, not because they see a 540V instead of 580V (both are good enough). A lot of schools will actually take all reported scores into consideration so my advice would be to avoid sending the first report even if you can. 520Q is ~30th percentile and can get your app summarily rejected in science/engineering fields. You do NOT want anyone to see that score, even if you had something like 650V the first time.

Thank you for your reply. I’m going into cognitive neuroscience (hopefully)

At first I was really annoyed about what happened but maybe it is a bit of good luck considering my really bad first quant score.

Any other thoughts?

The verbal scores are pretty much the same percentile wise, so it’s probably not a big deal. Like the previous poster said, it is probably a blessing that they will only see the second quantitative score.

My scores were:

400 verbal and 770 quantitative (1st time)
560 verbal and 790 quantitative (2nd time)

For clinical psych programs, I wish they only saw the second score :-(

Thank you for the reply.

A lot of the programs I’m applying to said they will take the highest score though. Do you think the +40 in verbal is worth never seeing the low quant?

I think clinical psych programs might also only care about the highest so you should be okay there :)
