If i was looking at competitive grad school programmes, how important is it to have to have done the GRE subject test (specifically the biochemistry cellular and molecular biology test for phD programmes in developmental biology)

if it's a requirement for your program (as it is for most), then i'd say it would be very important to have taken it.

as for the score, that's a little more flexible -- GRE results are only one of the various factors they take into account.

Many programs just "recommend" the test, but I personally felt that there was a bit of an edge to that recommendation -- that if I hadn't submitted my score, perhaps programs would have assumed I'd gotten a low one.

But if a program just asks for a subject test and doesn't specify which one, you can take either the molecular/cell biology test or the general biology test. The advantage of taking the general biology test is that there are more study materials available.
