Great article by Cal Ph.D. candidate about privitization of UC

Most private schools will give students grants, scholarships, etc., totaling as much as $60,.000 a year to offset tuition, room and board. I know of a number of students who gave up free rides at private universities to attend Berkeley.

Berkeley is not even affordable for in-state students as the financial package is much bleaker than that of private universities, regardless of income.

The only scholarship worth anything is Regents and students have to make up their mind a year before that they will attend Berkeley and then have to compete. Top students may not qualify as many don’t know their plans a year in advance. Other schools offer full free financial aid with the acceptance letters as an incentive. Most students not getting regents have tremendous trouble affording Berkeley.

So, throw away the myth that private schools are less affordable. In California, the only schools that are affordable are private.

Now, if none of the tuition money is going to education, why should there be any tuition money at all required for attendance? Students are screened for ability and knowledge in advance of entry. This used to be the criteria for attending.

i AGREE WITH AK. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH RADICALISM.
