Hi. I'm still looking into a colleges and am currently a senior. I'm a definitely intent on pursuing a Computer Science major. However, I've also a great interest in possibly going to medical school. What are great computer science colleges that also have good preMed advising and system? Also, I would like to know the average GPA of CompSci majors at those colleges because anyone interested in Medical School knows that GPA is crucial. I once read somewhere that one needs at least a 3.5 GPA to have any chance of getting into Medical school.

Of course, in college, I will participate in extracurriculars relating to my major and/or interest in medicine as well. However, while I will possibly pursue social efforts, I won't be putting too much time into that. Therefore, while I will be active outside pure academics, I will theoretically still have enough time to study and do well in academics. However, as different colleges have different reputations for certain areas such as biology (Some schools are known to have a killer biology department for example), I want suggestions of colleges where the chances of working out with a CompSci major and preMed are good for a person like me. (My current GPA is a relatively low 3.8 but I am confident it would of been much higher if I didn't procrastinate so much but I'm working on this. By college, my time management should be much better.)

Colleges I am looking into and express great interest in applying to include University of Washington, University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign, University of California - Berkeley and Los Angeles

MAIN REQUEST for ASSISTANCE: Please comment on the CompSci major difficulty and the Biology department of the above colleges.

My grades are said by others to guarantee admissions into University of Washington and University of Illinois while University of California - Berkley and Los Angeles are reaches.

I would appreciate all feedback and assistance on this matter.

Berkeley: L&S CS major would be about 14 courses, pre-med courses (other than math which the L&S CS major covers anyway) would be about 8-9 courses, English composition would be 2 courses, and L&S breadth would be about 4 courses more. If one takes an average of 32 courses over 8 semesters, that would leave 3-4 courses worth of free electives.

Be aware that direct admission to Washington’s CS major is much more difficult than getting admitted as an undeclared student at the school as a whole. But undeclared students then face an extremely competitive admissions process later to declare the CS major after completing the prerequisites.

*Academic Performance
GPA on 4 scale: 3.79 unweighted
Note: 8th grade (middle school) honors/accelerated courses have been included in the GPA as calculated by my high school for some reason
Class rank: TBA

Are you instate for NY?

You’re looking at several OOS publics…what are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay? Most OOS publics will expect you to pay full OOS costs. If your parents are fine with that, then great.

If you’re applying to UWash as a stepping stone to UWash’s SOM, then think again. Getting accepted to UWash’s SOM as an OOS student is very difficult.

mom2collegekids, I’m not looking to University of Washington’s School of Medicine. I just want to get into their strong Computer Science program and take pre-med courses there.

par72, I’m looking specifically at colleges that are known to have a strong CompSci program along with good pre-med advising for an undergraduate student.

barkk123, Rice University is in Texas which is too far south for my liking: I’m not a fan of the weather there.
