I have a cum. GPA of 3.9 UW with some AP's but I am not fairing well on the ACT and SAT. What will admissions think of that? How important are great test scores when you have a high GPA and class rank (top 10 % out of 330)

If you have an SAT score below 1400, I would not consider trying for the Ivies.

Sorry, but, unless you have a REALLY good hook (like, crew), I would say it's hurting your chances quite a bit.

I'm not considering the Ivies but do you think I could get into any selective schools?

What region do you live in?
Also, what do you mean by selective schools? Each one is different from the other. Some clarification would help. =)

I'm thinking about midwest schools. What about U of Mich. Northwestern, Marquette etc..

How much weight do you think colleges put on test scores when you do real well in high school?

***... sat's are one aspect that aren't even focused on that much... that said, if someone is well rounded and has a 1350 sat... why should they not apply to the ivies... the fact of the matter is, i know multiple people that don't have stand out hooks that go to cornell, dartmouth, even a couple at yale... john126, don't be put off by negative comments, apply where you want, if you want to apply to the ivies, u'd still have a decent shot...

as for schools in the midwest... if ur doing u mich, send your app as soon as you can, since it's rolling u'd have a good chance... marquette i'd say is a match... and nw is more of a reach, but still realistic

I didn't get the best SAT scores and i got in to tons of places i didn't think would take me. I was also surprised to find out that i got in to many schools that my friends didn't get in to. It depends on lots of factors.

Well, I didn't have the best of SATs/ACTs but a really great GPA with a difficult course load(and straight A's in college courses) and I got into some schools which I never thought I would.

As always, apply to some dream reach schools, some total matches, and a few absolute safety schools.

anovice-what were your scores and GPA? What college courses did you take? and what schools did u get into?

Different colleges put different weight on different things, but look at it this way: selective colleges have the means and indeed they must consider all applicants more in-depth than a few numbers. There are so many qualified applicants for each spot in the entering class that numbers are simply not always enough. I think admissions officers understand that some people simply don't take standardized tests well. Anyway, do you want to go to a college that judges you so completely on numbers?

If your score is far below their middle 50%, I would worry a bit, and make sure you have safeties. But if the rest of your application is amazing, and it's clear that you're a strong candidate who doesn't fare well in the (very stressful) testing environment, then don't stress yourself out over it.

Good luck! :)
