Ive been looking into it over my thanksgiving break and im starting to wonder whether or not it wold be a good idea to get a great desktop and just a cheap laptop. Right now i have a macbook pro btu i would really like to game and as powerful as this laptop is it might not be great for gaming. I could probaly get a year or two old laptop for like $300 and then i could get about a $1500 desktop which would be top of the line for gaming. Does that seem like a good idea or am i missing the benefits of having a laptop (other than writing a paper in the library)

you won’t be able to play any of the newer games on the older laptop. If you have a macbook pro use Bootcamp to run xp or vista natively. They run very very well on macbook pros. the system wilkl be running natively, so there are no virtual machines aka parallels. This means Vista (which is preferred for newer games due to direct-x 10) will run as quickly as it does on a brand new PC with similar specs.

for best gaming a desktop would be preferred though. Yea, for school and web browsing you don’t need too powerful of a laptop. A year old model should suffice for papers, web browsing, emailing and running basic applications.

I was in the same predicament you were in Andrassy. I just decided to get good desktop. It’s like $500 cheaper than a comparably equipped notebook. Also make sure to check if the college you entered into has any special discounts from the major companies. Good luck.
