Great New Book on College Auditioning

My daughter and I began some colleges visits and several of the colleges recommended a wonderful book called "I GOT IN! The Ultimate College Audition Guide For Acting And Musical Theatre". (My daughter is interested in MT and dance) but this book addresses acting programs and talks a lot about monologues and the whole audition process. I posted about it on the musical theatre board but wanted to share it here because we have found it to be a great resource. Good luck to all you Thespians!

I’m curious how colleges would be recommending a book that was just published this week. What colleges did you visit?

My guess is they can recommend the book because so many of these schools know Mary Anna (the author) and have worked with her and auditioned/admitted her students. If you go to her website, you can listen to the podcasts with the folks at NYU/Tisch, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, Pace, TCU, Texas State, Coastal Carolina, etc. She has relationships with the faculty at these schools and more so she knows what she is talking about.

Disclaimer - Mary Anna (“Moo” to her students) was my D’s monologue coach this year so I am totally biased. :)

I too got the book- It’s a great way to get all this CC information in one compact place.

I really don’t know when the book was published. I just know it was recommended to us and it is really helpful with great information.

Classical - I just found out that the I Got In book is available at Samuel French in LA and the Drama Book Shop in NYC. You and I were one of the 1st!

I ordered this book through Amazon.com after reading about it here. It came in a few days and it seems to be well-organized with some very useful information. (I don’t know the author or any of the people recommending it here.)

Wanted to bump this up for the poster who is looking to order this book.

Short, to the point, doesn’t go into great depth but worth 15 bucks. I would suggest you visit the podcast on the website they are excellent.

Yeah wineguy - podcasts give more direct information than college visits because it’s with the head of the department and it’s free!

What a special treat! We happened to be in New York for the weekend and had the pleasure of attending Drama Book Shop book signing for I GOT IN! We got to meet the author, Mary Anna Dennard who was there along with her student, Hunter Herdlicka who is co-starring on Broadway in a Little Night Music with Bernadette Peters. Mary Anna is a college audition coach and we have heard she is one of the best. How great it was to hear her speak and to meet Mr. Herdlicka. He went to Carnegie Mellon but I think was musical theatre, not acting. Now we want to see the show! Wish we didn’t have to come home.

Thank you for this post. I just ordered the book!

I am one of the college reps that have been suggesting the book. I’ve had a copy for several weeks, and it was on sale at the International Thespian Conference. I like the book because it gives down to earth practical advice and answers so many questions for students who are beginning this process.
