How about some suggestions from D-students on some of the don't-miss Professors.

Dartmouth Review published a list of best:

and worst:

Thanks!

........

These links are great! Thanks, Raspberry.

'In one of the first professor evaluations in the Review, we wrote of unbearable Winters in Hanover. Nearly two decades later, hes still here, and somebody forgot to tell him that Mondale lost.'

I'm such a Government dork, I laughed hysterically at this for like a full minute. This overrules skiing-for-credit as today's I-Didn't-Think-I-Could-Love-Dartmouth-More-But-Hearing-This-Now-I-Do...which I might as well start abbreviating as IDTICLDMBHTNID lol

I think you may need to abbreviate your abbreviation!

When you get to school you will be able to log in and read student reviews on various professors.

Daughter took Christensen for greek history last term, she said he is an amazing lecturer, a nice person and keeps the class interesting but he gives a brutal work load (approx 200 pages of reading per night, quizzes each class on the reading, a critical analysis question each class-not bad, midterm, final and 3 papers)

She too Lee Witters for Bio, and said he was really great.

She has Cohen this term for Introduction of the Neurosciences who she loves

She is taking her first year seminar with Cook spring term (says he is retiring this year) and said there were many people disappointed that they could not get into the class because she has heard nothing but good things about him

Awesome link Raspberry,

There's nothing like seeing a prof/teacher sliced by their students...in print, lmao.

I'm taking Simons this term...great, great prof.

Take the Dartmouth Review rankings with a grain of salt, Garrod and Edsforth are some of the most loved Professors at Dartmouth, and two of my favorites. Edsforth hasnt secured tenure because of a crappy history dept chair who has very different viewpoints. Edsforth's History of the automobile class was my favorite class at Dartmouth. Remember the Review comes from a conservative viewpoint, and Garrod and Edsforth are bigtime liberals.

Heide Whelan is an excellent prof, by no means "crappy," and the vice-chair, Lagomarsino, is consistently praised as one of the best profs at the College.

Yeah that's a good point...Dartmouth Review is essentially rating these profs on how openly liberal they are.

Xanatos,

Most of the best and worst professors get on their respective lists not from any ideological intent, but because they are either outstanding or awful teachers. Their political ideology only comes into play when they impose it on others, such as grading a paper poorly because they disagree with the argument.

[quote]
Garrod himself does not apologize for his political biases and is wont to show them, presenting as undisputed fact arguments for his pet liberal causes.

I don't see where that says anything about his grading policies. It just disdains his "pet liberal causes."

An avid feminist critic, Professor Silver reads literature with the firm belief that anything longer than it is round must be a phallus. Silver is addicted to anything anti-male and holds androgyny to be the human ideal. If you enjoy listening to the classics of Western culture being destroyed by feminist deconstruction, then you will love her lectures.

Ditto.

Yes, some of the reviews talk about other things and bring up potentially legitimate points (I say potentially because I haven't had these profs myself so I can't judge). However, in some instances they are basically complaining about professors that are too liberal.

You've never had Silver...if you did I suspect you'd think differently.

But Edsforth, he's an awesome teacher...

Hey Wisconsinguy, I agree, they are both great! I am sorry to imply blaming the "letting go" on them, they actually weren't responsible for his departure at all.

For those who don't know, Edsforth was let go. He was re-hired due to student and faculty outcry (and major support from President Wright).
