Great SAT, mediocre GPA in West

Hello,
Please forgive a duplicate/related post on another thread, but I'm eager to get input to decide where to send the Nat'l Merit report from the letter we just received; we only get to send info to two schools by 5/26/11. My S has a very high SAT score (2200 overall: 770 math, 720 verbal, 700 writing) but a mediocre GPA (3.35), partly because ours is a VERY rigorous high school and limited opportunities for weighted classes. Can anyone provide recommendations for good schools (we live in CA), OOS is ok if there is some money available (not need-based).

First of all, the NM choices at this point are rather meaningless, so relax. These choices do not help a child get accepted or anything like that.

Your son’s GPA may keep him from qualifying for NMF and for merit scholarships at schools since many require at least a 3.5 or 3.75 along with the high SAT scores.

If your son does make NMF, then there are some schools that will give him big NMF scholarships.

However, his GPA will likely prevent him from many merit scholarships that aren’t NMF related.

Are his grades mostly B’s and a few A’s? Does he have any C’s?

What is his weighted GPA???

What is his likely major?

are you saying that you won’t qualify for any/much need based aid, so you need merit-based aid? Do you know how much you can afford to contribute each year?
