I'm a high school student going into college (duh) and right now I'm in a sort of dilemma. Pretty much my resume is perfect except for my GPA, which is tending to bring me down pretty low. Heres my stats:
GPA: 3.1 (Unweighted)
Ranking: Top 25%
SAT: 2390
SATII: 5 Taken (800 on each)
AP: 6 Fives, One Four
Extra-curricluars: Captain and Founder of Debate, Head of Model UN, Student Representative to School Board, Editor in Chief of School Newspaper, Founder of Latin Club, Piano (8 years), Saxophone (8 years), Guitar (8 years), member of band, jazz band, and rock band.
Sports: Varsity Soccer (Jr year Senior Year), Varsity Tennis (Jr, Sr.)
Recommendations: Extremely Strong
Essay: Killer (As far as I can tell)
Awards: Semi-Finalist for PSATS (low GPA killed me), Yale Osterweis Debate Tournament Winner, CDA (Connecticut Debate ASsociation) #1 Speaker (8 times), CCLE (Connecticut Consortium of Law and Debate) run-upper (twice).
Basically my student profile is an extremely capable young man with a low GPA. I'm pretty popular and teachers like me, but its more of one of those things where I just dont apply myself. I know its pretty lame, and i don't expect any sympathy (and i don't deserve any) but I wanted a realistic and true evaluation of my chances.

The Schools I Am looking at: George Washington, George Town, Yale (both parents on Faculty), Vassar, Haverford, UConn, NYU, Columbia, Swarthmore, Amherst, Darthmouth.

It's kind of hard to magine that your parents, in the education community, have not told you how unrealistic your list is. Even if you go to Choate and took their very hardest classes and went to Yale in your spare time, it's hard to believe you could get into any ivy, Amherst, Swat, Gtown, etc. NYU and vassar seem your best bets.

I figured that the Ivy's were out of my chances, but my question is for places such as George Washington, Carnegie Mellon (woops didn't mention that), NYU, and Vasser, do I have a realistic chance.

SAT: 2390
SATII: 5 Taken (800 on each)
AP: 6 Fives, One Four

These scores are ridiculously good. As a note to future readers... his GPA is nothing praiseworthy but lets not forget how stellar his scores are.

bobby, if he had a 3.1 from choate with 2390SATs iwould say he has a moderate shot at the ivies....there are many kids from hotchkiss around 3.0-3.3 range with around 2100-2200 SATs get into ivies....and choate is at the same level...so sorry to break ur little analogy

Sorry guys, I actually go to public school. I got into Choate and Hopkins but decided not to go. Not sure if that helps, just throwing that in there

Bearcat, I've seen your posts so I know you like to think that. But look a little deeper. At Andover, anyone with the equiv of that GPA who went ivy was a recruited athlete. legacy or development candidate. Actually, his best chance seems to be Yale.

i think he has a chance at lower ivies...specially cornell and penn....penn actually accepted quite a lot of unhooked below 3.4 from us last year....... while yale is just amazingly strict

of courseu cant find the data online...but at school we do receive packets of charts and stats of kids who get in...and we know the people who actually get in..so it's easy for us to match the people with the dots on the charts....now..living with the same 550 people everyday...we know who's a legacy, who's development and who's an athlete...i m just saying...at the lower ivies last year, they accepted a good number of unhooked people below 3.4...specifically penn... like around 3 or 4...and cornell, like 2....
i agree he has extremely slim chance at HYPS but i think lower ivies are good shots

haha don't worry about it- no drugs (trust me). And don't be sorry: I'm responsible for my actions and my bad grades are my mistake. But I would say that I would get into a second tier college no?

Both parents on faculty and ridiculous test scores...Yale seems like a good chance. Hell, make up some bs about a learning dificulty that only occurs in the classroom (j/k....before everyone dumps on me).

Regardless of your chances, would you even be up for the rigorous educational atmosphere at these colleges? I don't see why a slacker would WANT to go them, regardless of your innate brilliance.

The scores on your ap tests demonstrate a modicum of competence, at the very least. Which classes did you get your Bs/Cs/whatevers in? There's a difference between getting a B in gym and getting a B in ap lang.

slackers who can get into good colleges r the people who r going to be getting a's and b's in college and people who work extremely hard and can;t work any harder in high school r going to be getting c's and d's. anyhow basically the general rule go to the college that will accept you and that you want to go to =D
