Great Schools for American History

I'm really intrested in getting my degree in History from a school that has a great American History program. Does anyone know of schools that are in or around major NE cities that have a great American History program?
Thanks

Brown University in Providence, RI, has Prof. Gordon S. Wood, who is a great writer and speaker on the American Revolution.

I don’t know how good Columbia is, but the textbook we use in my high school’s AP program is written by a professor from Columbia named Alan Brinkley. It’s a really good textbook, and I would really like to have a class with him someday.

These are a bit down south, but I’ve heard UVA has a really good history dept. Not positive though. It would make sense, their campus being history and all. I also see their professors on the History Channel from time to time.

Richmond has a guy, I believe he is the president now, but I think he still teaches named Edward Ayers. I read a couple of his books for a paper I wrote on the Civil War and they were really great books. Not sure what kind of a teacher he is though. He used to be a dean of something at UVA before moving to UR too

History, particularly US history, is strong at most decent colleges. You’ll have to be a great deal more specific.

Public or private?

Coed or single-sex?

Small (< 2000), medium (2000-10000), or large (10000+)?

Is cost an issue?

Do you want certain extracurricular activities, like a fencing team?

Popular Greek life or no Greek life?

Do you have special needs (LD, physically disabled, etc.)?

How selective do you want?

A small town in NY has one: West Point!

American history in itself is a broad topic.

Like are we talking about pre-colonial? Colonial? Revolutionary/Independence era? 20th century?

Wm and Mary for pre-colonial and colonial (Jamestown)
