Great second-tier boarding schools

Does anyone have recommendations on schools that are not as well known as andover, exeter, etc. but are still great places? Preferably in the New England area. I'd just like to know what my options are. (Any thoughts about Northfield Mount Herman or Brooks?)

Brooks is probably third or fourth tier. Northfield is pretty good.
Some schools below New York that are great are Foxcroft, Madeira, and Lawrenceville.

Episcopal High School is pretty average (75 SSAT), but in a good location right off Washington, D.C.

Check out boardingschoolreview.com... you can request a list of schools especially in the New England area, and they will give you a list of average SAT and SSAT scores to see which are first-tier, second-tier, third-tier, etc.

Lawrenceville is okay. I lived there for about a week and
1) i didnt like the dorms at all.
2) campus is pretty nice
3) food is horrible! even though that doesnt matter
thats about it. everything is really spread out
I dont know about it academically because I was there for some summer program, but it is really good. second tier? it might be safe to say so.

Sam_N -- There are many great boarding schools. What are you looking for? Are there specific classes you want? Does dress code/ religious affiliation matter? Any particular sports? Social life, etc.? The little I know about Brooks is positive; it seems very traditional. Northfield Mount Hermon is unique -- a little different from many. A few of my contemporaries call it the "hippie" school, although this is probably a misnomer. I did not visit either school. Did you consider St. Marks? In CT you might want to consider Loomis Chaffee, Kent and Westminster. If you look beyond New England, consider the MAPL schools - Blair, Lawrenceville, the Hill, Peddie, and Mercersburg. The Hun School is also MAPL, but their % boarding is low. My son goes to Blair, and it is a great school. It's easy to reach from Rt. 84.
If you could be more specific about what you are looking for, it would be helpful. Remember that many boarding schools routinely send the top 10% - 30% of graduates to top colleges.

olivia, Episcopal is far from average. It's probably one of the best schools in the southern United States. A 75 percentile SSAT isn't average, either. 50% is. Even a 50% isn't really average when you compare it nationally. I got a 40 percentile and all of my national percentiles were in the nineties.

Sorry - I didn't mean average. I recognize it's a terrific school and I know a few people who went there who are really amazing people. It is 'average' compared to AESD for many people on CC.

I know, it was known as the Gentleman School of the South, but now, of course, it is co-ed.

Yeah, it is.

I thought foxcroft was good, but after looking at it, it doesn't really seem so great. Even in the realm of girls schools, it doesn't look comparable to emma willard or miss porters...

What's Millbrook School's average SSAT?

Avg SSAT for Millbrook: 61%

Thanks, loophole.

Gunnery is also a very good school in a very nice area and has a very pretty campus.

That's where my uncle went. Is it still all-boys?

Episcopals pretty good, but I would never say it's one of the best in the south. I know alot of students that go there and they are mostly very very wealthy semi-bright kids. Their campus is pretty nice though, and their sports facilities looked very impressive.

speaking of schools in the south, baylor's suppossed to be pretty good idk. i know they have a great fencing program, lol for anyone interested in that. ^_^

Avg SSAT for The Gunnery is 50%. Acceptance rate is 65%.

Some of the comments on this board are too much:

"Brooks is third or fourth tier" -- get a clue.

Lawrenceville campus is pretty nice" -- Olmstead is rolling over in his grave.

Fun is fun, so you think Brooks is higher and that Lawrenceville is ugly?

oh idk fun is fun means it more than jsut 'pretty nice'. lol iono, i thought lawrenceville had a very attractive/well kept campus.

??? well, people are asking for opinions, so that's what they're getting.
