Hi, I am a newbie here, I just want to say this is a great, informative site. Kudos to the creators.

Anyway, I have a question. I am a basketball player and have been invited to the Eastern Invitational Academic Elite Camp. This is a very selective camp for the top players in the country and a ton of high level academic schools will be attending. I would love to go but my parents are letting me attend (for financial reasons) either this or the National Youth Leadership Conference. Now, regardless of the potential recruiting advantages of the BBall camp, which one is more impressive to college admissions officers and will give me a greater increase in my chances of admission - the Eastern Invitational Academic Elite Basketball Camp or the National Youth Leadership Conference?? Thanks a lot!

By the way, I am looking at such schools as Stanforn, UPenn, Cornell, Notre Dame, etc.

NYLC (and other similar programs...CSLC, etc) generally don't give a boost in admissions except to show that you have money. Duke's program and Harvard SSP can help I believe, but not NYLC. And who knows...you could get a scholarship to Stanford or Notre Dame out of the basketball camp. No scholarship from the Ivy schools of course, but good exposure. A guy from my HS was on a select AAU team that travelled all over the country last summer and I think he attended the Nike or Adidas camp and now is on a full ride at a D-I school.

While National Youth Leadership Conference will be enriching for its attendees, I concur w/Cards4life: the hoops camp is simply more exclusive -- and the recruiting contacts you make there will have more "oomph" as far as your immediate goal of packaging yourself for the best college opportunities.

are you looking to play ball in college? Are you being recruited or hoping to be recruited? If the answer is yes, I don't think there is any question but that the Eastern Invitational is a better choice. NYLC can be fun and interesting, but it will do nothing for your college application.

Thanks guys, I was leaning towards the camp, but I really had to idea how "exclusive" the NYLC was. So far, recruiting wise, I have been to UPenn's camp a week ago, and they havent responded yet. From what everyone is saying about the NYLC, I agree. Its no contest- the camp is for me.
