Is this per semester or per year? The cost is listed at $450.

semester. meal plan meals average around 8 - 9 bucks each.

must be delicious…

some kids hate the dining halls. my kid doesn’t mind them. of course, she likes other things better, but it is not so bad that it is inedible as some here would have you believe.

Would you suggest paying the “no meal” plan fee, if you have a student who doesn’t care for the dining hall experience? I think it’s $197/sem.

idk - is your daughter going greek? i guess that is a dumb question … considering the title of the thread.

anyway … if she is greek she will have meals at the house. i have a hard time with the idea of paying the 200 for literally nothing, but it is probably the thing to do. 50 meals a week is roughly 3 per week. idk when the houses do not serve, but i know there are a few meals a week that they do not serve. kids would probably rather eat out at these times than eat meal plan food, but fried chicken day is really good and really popular! : )

are you able to pay the $197 no meal fee for 2 semester only? - give 1st semester a try with the dining hall?

idk - i know they say that meal plans are a yearly contract and they expect you to keep the same one all year, but this may be different.

She’s like nailing spaghetti to a wall, right now…can’t get a definitive answer out of her for the life of me.

Thanks for the suggestions!

This may be a different situation entirely, but in past years you could bump a plan up at anytime, but you could NOT go down. They’ve made changes, so who knows now.

I’d get the greek 50. She can always use it for Grab n Go items at Julia’s in Tutweiler. Sororities don’t have meals on the weekends either right?

ahhhh…Casino, back in my life. Complete!

bamagirls - you could downgrade before. you just had to pay a fee and lose any rollover meals you had. the rules may be different now though. idk.

asaunmom - i tend to look at the numbers.

you can pay the 197 and then have 250 dollars to use anywhere (27ish 9 dollar meals, or more if your daughter is one who can grab a quick cheap meal now and then).

or you can pay the 450 for the greek50 where your daughter will likely not use 20 of the meals anyway! haha

if she is a kid like mine (money conscious, not wasteful, and not terribly picky) then she would likely use the greek50 pretty well. if she is a princess, then paying for the greek50 will probably be a waste. since almost all their meals are provided at the house, there is little reason to eat at the dining hall. and when the house isn’t serving, it is usually at a time when kids are out and about anyway. and don’t forget there are lots opportunities for free food at meetings and events.

i am hoping that sorority house food is better than dining hall food. and if it is, your daughter might not want to eat the ickier food at the dining halls.

i am not trying to sway you towards one or the other. i think as a freshman mom i would have probably done the greek50, but with a couple years behind me, i am not sure that is what i would do with the knowledge i have now.

I’m going to have her check out the selection in Tut during BB.
- She is a “Princess” (not really but she’s a vegetarian and not into “southern” food) Trust me she doesn’t get that from her momma
- My thought is to apply the difference, between no meal plan and Greek 50, to her Bama cash acct. She will not have a car to run to Mugshots and all the other favs but I know that she can get to many places that take Bama cash without a car.
- It’s a wash for me either way.

I believe Publix accepts Bama cash. She would most likely benefit from a salad to go from Publix. Paying $9 for some lettuce and a few tomatoes makes me cringe.

I realized that my post wasn’t clear after I posted. Greeks could downgrade to the Greek 50, but a student couldn’t just decide the needed to decrease a meal plan otherwise although they could increase…or so we were told repeatedly. Sorry I wasn’t clear.:)…probably not relevant here anyway.

here is a quote from the campus dish page:

“In addition, we are also allowing the ability to roll over unused meals at the end of the fall semester. This means that if there are any unused meals on a student’s meal plan at the end of the fall semester, they will automatically roll over into the spring semester, unless a student chooses to downgrade or not enroll for the spring semester.”

so according to this, a student can downgrade.

a first year student may not downgrade to a smaller plan even with non-freshman standing. i know that has been discussed her a good bit.

Wow. Perhaps I stand corrected and will defer to your knowledge on the subject. I wasn’t aware we weren’t talking about freshmen or considered that this rule might be different for following years. I based my post on freshman year, sorry.

this post was just talking about greek 50. didn’t really specify freshman, so that is where my mind was.

no need to apologize.

guess we were both right about what we were talking about! : )

:) :)
