Greek life at Penn State Main campus

Hi! I am an international undergraduate student (from Germany) and as I can see it right now I will transfer to Penn State (My application status is saying that they will offer me a formal admission when my evaluation of credentials is available)

It would be awesome if anyone can tell me about the greek life at Penn State University park. First of all, I would like to know how important it is to be in a sorority? It is really important to me to make lots of friends, and I'm worried that it will be harder when I am not joining a sorority.
When I was an exchange student at a College in the US it was for example not a problem to be a date from a frat-brother for his formal, even I was not in a sorority. Would it be possible to go on a formal/cocktail or any frat-partys/events on Penn STate even when I'm not in a sorority?

Don't get me wrong, I would love to join a sorority, but I think it will be really difficult to find one which will choose me. In Germany students are normally older than in the US, because I had to attend HIgh school for one year longer, also I had a gap year, so I'll turn 23 in Ocotber and when I'm at Penn State in spring 2014 I'll probably be a junior. Is it possible to join a sorority with my age and as a junior student? And would it change anything that I'm an international student?

Also, since I am an international student, I'll not get any financial aid, so I have to pay everything by myself. Therefore, it is also important to me how much it will cost to be in a sorority. Can anyone tell me approximately how much I have to expect?

Also, can I join a sorority in Spring or is it only possibel to pledge in fall?

Thank you so much for any kind of help!

You will make great friends and can have an awesome experience at PSU without joining a sorority. Just join some clubs to start with.

I can’t answer your questions. Sorry.

Hi I am also an international student like you and I have been accepted to university park for spring 2014. But I am having problems since I will get my I-20 in late November. Do you have the same problem like me? Do you think there will be any problem getting visa since I am getting I-20 pretty late?

Hi!
I don’t think it will be a problem, when you get the visa in late november. Right now, I don’t know when I’ll get my visa. I have accepted the offer of admission on monday, and tomorrow I will complete my request for the I-20 form. So it will probably take a time until I’ll get my visa. I hope it will be in november and not later.
From where are you? Will you be a freshmen or did you transferred?

Actually I am from Bangladesh. I have been accepted as a freshman for undergraduate degree in engineering by the university. I am also in the same situation right now just like you. I also will complete my request for I-20 form today and hopefully get my I-20 within November. Do you think it will be alright if I get my I-20 in late November? Don’t you think it will be late for visa process? What are you doing now for preparing for visa?

Since I am an international student I have to pay the full tuition and I didn’t get any financial aid from the university. Did you get any financial aid? Do you think I can get financial aid if I get a good GPA in my freshman year?

When you will complete your request for the I-20 today it is very likely to get the form in mid november. They said it will take 1 to 2 weeks to process your request.
I see your point that it’s very late to get the visa, but the admission told me that the earliest decision about admission to the university are made in mid/end of october. So this situation with late applying for visa is for any international student.
Last year I was accepted as an exchange student for spring 2013 in the US. I had my visa appointment in the mid of november, so not so much earlier than this year (I guess we we’ll be able to make the appointment in late november) But some of my friends had the appointment not until december and it worked out for all of them.

Yes, that’s true. We as international students have to pay the whole out-of state tuiton and we have to confirm (financial requirements) the university that we or our parents are able to cover up all of the expenses for all the 4 years. Since I’ll be a transfer student, I hope that I only need to study 2 more years until graduation, but my parents are prepared for 4 years as well.
I really don’t think you should expect financial help, even with a good gpa. Financial help is only eligible for american citizens, your gpa doesn’t matter as an international student. The only way to get at least a little support are scholarships where you have to apply directly. And the amounts are not as big as financial aid. Maybe 2,000 Dollars for one scholarship. But so far I have not inform myself about those options, so I cannot tell you more about that.
The last option to get support is the shreyers college, this is a special program where you have to fulfil special course requirements and I think also more credits than for a normal study program. I think each student from this college will get 3,000-4,000 $ each year. But I’m not sure if you can apply for that when you’re already enrolled in the university. I think normaly you apply for this college when you apply at all.

I have already filled the “request review of visa document” of istart and also submitted the request. I have also filled address information, biographical/student information, current immigration documents, financial information/documents and submitted their requests. I don’t have any dependents so do I have to fill the “add dependent check list”? I have filled all these check lists but still no tick mark is given on the check list “I-20/DS-2019-Request, Refuse or Transfer Sevis Record” why? Does this mean than I did something wrong?
Also since I have submitted all the requests does this mean that my information will be reviewed and my I-20 will be processed?
Are there any thing else now that I need to do to get my I-20?

Ok, just to mention: I am also just an international student, so I can try to explain your question, but please don’t blame me if it’s wrong. If you want to be 100% sure you should contact DISA from Penn State.

As I understood it, you don’t need to fill out the check lists for dependents. I just completed my request and therefore I know that they asked me if I will apply for any dependents. Since I answered “no”, there was also no checklist to fill out. Did you maybe clicked “yes” when they asked for dependents?

Second, I think I read that there will be a tick mark when your request was processed. So right now, you have been the only one who has worked on it, but the tick mark will appear when Penn state has confirmed the request.

As I know, you just have to wait until Penn state or DISA is contacting you again with further constructions.

I saw that the difference between the six campus meal levels are the amount of money. Are campus meal level6 offers more food than level-1 of campus meal? Also are there any more differences between these levels? Which campus meal level did you choose and why?

Again, I am an international student, just as you. You should probably contact the different departments at Penn State for your questions.
