Greek life at Tufts

My son is considering greek life and I am am curious if anyone has stats on how this affects
new students..awful? ok? non issue?
Thank you

I don’t think you’ll find a ton of hard numbers, if that’s what you’re looking for. I joined a sorority at a B10 school, so I have some bias, but overall, Greek life was/is a really great experience. That being said, it’s not for everyone. Greek life is an amazing way to meet people and make lifelong friends. I can honestly say I found my bridesmaids through my sorority. It’s a great built-in support system, if you have trouble in classes or need advice about professors to take, you always have older members to help. The philanthropy work that chapters do is really surprising, and it’s a great way to get involved with both the campus and the community.

However, you do have some drawbacks that need to be managed. Depending on the fraternity, pledgeship can take up a TON of time, but it does teach you time management. You also need to be able to balance the social aspects with academics, however, most chapters do a really good job with enforcing that with new members.

There is a thread for Tufts that would be a better place to pose your question. Go under the alphabetical listing of colleges and click on to Tufts.

My S1 is starting his second year at Tufts. Just brought him back yesterday. Before beginning at Tufts he had no interest in greek life. That quickly changed when he met a real nice group of kids and decided to “rush” second semester. It did take up a bunch of his time that whole semester. He planned in advance and took only 4 classes, so that was a help.

Your S should plan on perhaps taking only 4 classes the second semester when typically the freshman “rush” because a lot of their time is taken up with greek life activities.

There are some threads about Greek Life over at the Tufts forum. [Tufts University - College Confidential](Tufts University - College Confidential Forums)
