Hi,
I was wondering what the Greek life and social life in general is like at Tulane. Do most students only go to the bars and clubs off campus or are there frat parties too? I know fraternities and sororities are not officially recognized by the university, however, I know about 20-30 percent of students are also involved in Greek life.

This was recently discussed to some extent, but it was on page 2 of the threads so I guess you didn’t see it. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1054945-fraternities.html

However, I don’t think I understand your statement about frats and sororities not being recognized by Tulane. As far as I know, they are indeed subject to university review and status reports. I know there was one that lost recognition by the university for gross violations of policy, and there are a couple that are currently under differing degrees of sanctions for drinking and/or hazing violations. But that tells me that they are very much under university purview.

I think in another thread someone asked a very similar question about the bars and such, and the answer was that there are both parties at the frat houses and get-togethers at bars and clubs.

Thanks. I read that a little earlier. There is no second page to that thread though. I have read all of it. I guess what I was trying to ask, which I poorly (sorry, exhausted) was are there traditional greek parties on the Tulane campus. Or do people mostly bar hop in the city?

do you mean swaps, etc

LOL, I meant it was on the second page of the listing of threads, so I thought you might not have seen it. You are right that there is only one page of responses on that thread.

Here is the thread I was trying to remember earlier. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/317789-drinking-tulane.html It was an old thread that got resurrected, and starting on the 3rd page, around Post #35, it addresses some of what I think you are asking. If there is something missing from those answers, ask about what remains unanswered and I am sure a current student can tell you.

there are most definitely traditional fraternity parties at tulane, particularly during early spring semester when they are rushing new recruits. sororities also throw parties, but these are more likely to be mixers and date parties which will occur at bars and restaurants that they rent out (hence you must be invited to attend). anyone can attend the fraternity parties, and you will not be turned away whether you are a guy or a girl. i think the difference from most traditional schools is that fraternity parties are not the only venue for students to socialize, because many students will also bar hop/attend other off campus parties. greek life is absolutely recognized/a part of the university, and is overseen by tulane’s panhellenic board. i think where you may be confused is that while fraternities/sororities DO have houses, unlike other schools these houses are not large enough for everyone to live in them. (the houses are historic homes in the neighborhood next to campus, not traditionally built for the greek system). there is also an old louisiana law that states housing with a certain amount (can’t remember the number) of female residents is considered a brothel, hence only a few girls will live in the sorority houses. does this help you at all?

Yes. Thank you.
