Greek life at UIUC

Hello, I was wondering how Greek life is at U of I? Is it difficult to manage time? And what is the average cost to live in a house plus dues?

Im not in any frats or anything so I cant tell you about average costs and all that but from what I observed, they are VERY active. Theres some kind of party in all Greek houses every friday night (and the weekend of course) and they arnt afraid to blast music at full volume while some people still have classes in the afternoon lol. Sorry if i didnt exactly answer what you asked

Interesting… lol. I wonder if sororities are like that because if I go to U of I, I’ll probably rush. Any ways, what year are you in? What is your major? And are the classes extremely difficult? @DakStupidGenius

@iloveuwmandum Im not sure about sororities because they are not as publicly obnoxious as frats lol. From what I hear from some sorority girls I know, they tend to hang out with specific frats and host events sometimes. Lots of people rush so im guessing it should be manageable to balance between schoolwork and all that. Im a sophomore majoring in Accounting. First year was a breeze and should be easier than high school but each year will get more difficult. Level of difficulty would depend on your professors, your level of interest, and how often you seek help.

@DakStupidGenius
Yeah, the only reason I’m interested in joining a sorority is because I heard that it could be cheaper to live in their house rather than university housing.

If you don’t mind, I have a few questions…

  1. If I go undeclared, can I still transfer to the college of business? And do you know if it’s very competitive or what are you suppose to do in order to transfer?

  2. Do I need to do a lot of calculus if I want to major in finance, accounting, or business administration? And is the math hard in general?

  3. U of I is my top choice, but they only offered me a merit award of 5k per year, and I would have to take up loans of $12,000 a year. Do you think it’s worth being in all that debt just to attend UIUC?

I’m so sorry for all these questions; it’s because I have to make a tough decision if I should attend my dream school and pay all that money or go to a more affordable school, so I want to know as much as I can about U of I.

If cost is the consideration, just grab an apartment, you can get studios near campus for ~$500/month and even cheaper apartments if you’re willing to have roommates.

  1. You're only allowed to transfer after your freshman year. It is very competitive. Here's a quote from the UIUC Business website:

The College of Business does not have a minimum GPA requirement for ICT admission. However, admission is competitive and based on the applicant pool. The admissions committee will look at your Business Core GPA from your economics and math sequence, along with your cumulative Illinois GPA. The average cumulative Illinois GPA from 2010-2015 for admitted students is a 3.71/4.0.

Here’s a link to the website:

  1. The minimum math requirements for business students are Math 125 Linear Algebra and Math 234 Business Calculus.
  1. Yes, of course you can transfer but like what ilmomof2boys said, youll have to wait at least a year. I have two friends who were both undeclared during freshman year and both of them got into the College of Business as sophomores. However i also had a friend who didnt get accepted cuz her grades werent so hot. Just be sure to take some of the required business classes so you wont be too behind before you actually get transferred.

  2. All business students must take Business Calculus unless you had gotten credit on something equivalent to that (not sure so dont take my word for it). Dont worry though, in my opinion it was way easier than the Calc class i took in high school and youre actually taught how itll be relevant to your potential job. The other class is Linear Algebra. (Prof. Folwaczny teaches both classes and is the nice so get her if u can).

  3. I had also only gotten about $5k during my first year but my parents’ logic was that UIUC’s reputation and business program would give me a big chance of landing a good paying job so that the money would be worth it. Also it was the best school on my list that had accepted me so thats why i chose it. Remember there are always tons of scholarships out there for you to apply for if you truly wanna go for UIUC

Do not rush if all you want is “cheaper housing”. You won’t get to live in until sophomore year at the earliest and most sootorities only allow you to live in for 1-2 years. And live out dues are really expensive negating any “savings”. Get an off campus apartment to save money. Only rush because you truly want it. Plus there is no guarantee you’ll get a bid.

Thank you so much!!! @DakStupidGenius you’re awesome!

Thanks everyone for your responses; I extremely appreciate it
