Greek life at UMD

I've been considering getting into a sorority in college and was wondering how the scene was at Maryland. Is the greek system a big deal in the University of Maryland? Is there a certain stereotype within the people who go greek? Please let me know, Thanks.

My best advice to you is to go do a whole bunch of different sororties during Rush Week and choose the one you feel most comfortable with.

Hell, maybe even try to make friends with some of them before deciding to pledge.

Maryland is very big on Greek Life. Rush week is a huge week during the Fall/Spring semesters. Greek Week is another huge week during the year for the Sor./Frat.

Sor./Frat. will constantly be sponsoring events at clubs, local eateries, doing fundraising events, working at sports games. They're pretty much involved with most social aspects of going to CP.

There's a stigma with Frat./Sor. at every single college you go to. You get the people who label us as alcoholics, and losers who have to pay for our own friends. Those of us that are a part of Greek Life know this isn't true at all. There's a lot of different Sor/Frat. at UMD. You have your typical meathead Frats, the Jewish Frat, and other general Frats. As far as Sor. go, you have your typical Jewish Sor., preppy Sor., babe Sor., and other general Sororities. You'll be able to pick these out pretty easily during Rush Week.

I am definately going to look around during rush week. I will get a feel for it and then decide or not if I really want to do it.

I plan to do that too but I've been thinking about it lately cause I come from a small all girls school and think that maybe I will feel more "at home" in a sorority. But I will definitely check it out at first and then decide. I've heard from people in other colleges that it's also one of the best ways to have access to parties and stuff since you can't get into greek parties unless you are greek. I dunno if that's true but I do think being in a sorority will make me feel more comfortable... we'll have to see about that once I'm in college though.

i'm in a sorority; i'm really glad i joined because it helped me meet people, it's an automatic social scene, makes the campus smaller, etc. etc. it can be hard to get into fraternity parties (and especially to find out about them) if you aren't greek, so you're pretty on-target there.

about 12% of umd is greek. it's a great amount for those of us in it...for people who aren't, that's still 88% of campus who's not. greek life doesn't typically "take over" UMD like it does at some other schools (especially in the south).

fall recruitment is informal, so you can go to whichever houses you want for however long you want. you can meet sisters outside of recruitment parties and hang out with them or whatever you want to do. if you have enough credits from AP or whatever (you need 12) i definitely recommend rushing in the fall (i did) for 2 reasons.
1- spring recruitment SUCKS. it is a very intense week of going to first 14, then 10, then 6, then 3 different houses and finally you have bid day. you have to dress a certain way and you are herded around like sheep.
2- if you go through recruitment in the fall when you first get here, you aren't as aware of all the stereotypes, both good and bad, that certain chapters have. you'll be able to make a more unbiased decision about which house you feel most comfortable in and which sisters you feel most at home with.

if you want any other info about recruitment or whatever feel free to email me.....i promise i can be unbiased :)

for guys...........rush week is awesome. you get free food, often free beer, hang out and watch tv, whatever. it's very chill. i wish sorority recruitment was like fraternity rush. :P

so much for a pre-freshman year lack of bias. If I decide to go greek, I already have a sorority in mind, just from what I've heard from friends and friends with siblings.

i think that people should join a house based on how well they get along with the other girls in it and how they feel they fit in. just my opinion. :)
