How big is Greek life at University of Tennessee and Auburn University…do most students participate in it? Will i still have opportunities to go to parties even if i am not a part of it?
I am not the expert on this, but I do have daughters at each of these universities - the one at UTK is Greek, and the one at Auburn is not, and both are happy with their choices. Both UTK and Auburn are large, southern universities with a fairly strong Greek scene, but I know both Greek and non-Greek students at each, and I’d say the key is just to find your “group,” whether that’s Greek or not. It might be a club, intramural sport team, an Honors College group, or simply people from your dorm hall. You don’t say if you’re male or female, but at both campuses I’d say more females than males are Greek, and girls (Greek or not) will have an easier time getting into fraternity parties than non-affiliated guys. The sorority recruitment process is also much more stressful than fraternity rush!
It’s been a long time since you asked, but I thought I’d answer anyway. Greek life is pretty big at both colleges. The difference is that UTK now has sorority houses, while Auburn still houses the sororities in dorms. Greek life, however, is not as big a deal as it is at, say, Ole Miss or Alabama. More than half the students are NOT Greek. As HandL.Mum said, there are a multitude of other organizations in which to participate.Greeks are friendly with no-Greeks, and as on almost all campuses, the farther along you are in your college career, the less important it becomes.
