Greek Life fraternities

So how does joining a fraternity work? Are there a few weeks at the beginning of school to look around at different fraternities? When do people have to decide where to pledge? Also what percent of students end up going greek at texas, is it tough socially if you're not in a frat? THanks

You can find information about this at greekchat.com

Very important - do a search - there is a lengthy thread about UT fraternity recruitment - but don't post for a while. They eat the young there.

Socially, it's tough if you don't do anything. Rush is already more or less over for the big four fraternities in the sense that the rush captains have a general sense of who they will bid, but there's a lot more out there at UT than just the Greek system. Mainly, it's important to get involved in something.

Having a rich daddy, being a ****** bag most of the time, and wearing a baseball cap (preferably backward). I don't think there are many other requirements!

That was constructive picox;).

My son is in a fraternity, he doesnt' have a rich daddy, he doesn't wear baseball caps backwards, and he most certainly isn't a ******bag.

The opening poster obviously is interested in greek life and membership in a fraternity. Your close minded, bigoted, and obviously biased post won't dissuade him, it will only point out your rudeness.

Why does every sorority girl have to talk like a 9 year old girl? Were they all molested?

Really classy - you must be a real gem. Your mom must be so proud.

At least there are no sorority/fraternity types in math/computer science.

Wrong again bucko, son's roommate is a 4.0 computer science major - also fraternity guy... Your misconceptions are astounding...

picox is a nerd who sits in his room on saturday night playing halo and eating hot pockets

I'm partial the Croissant Pockets actually.

Of course none of what I wrote is true. Just like the several guys who died in hazing murders and other incidents at UT frat houses in the last decade or so isn't true either... nor the criminal abuse charges for beatings and drownings... all myths.

I've no facts at all.

Ya and no UT students ever die from alcohol unless they're in a fraternity, especially not the two who have in the past year, neither of which were greek.

Have fun being bitter because you can't get in to our parties, I'm sure your dungeons and dragons game is just as fun.

Asian frat boys don't count haha...

How do you know if your son is a ******bag or not?

My son isn't in an Asian fraternity and neither is his roommate, who is a plegdebrother of my son, foxshox.

And, I think I'd know if my son was a *****bag considering I've lived with him for the last 20 years. I certainly have a better handle on his character than any of you.

Next?

The "hazing murder" you speak of did happen in an Asian fraternity though, so maybe those guys aren't that smart. The other fraternity death that occurred was the guy who fell off the balcony 2 years ago at Towers after he left the fraternity house where he had too much to drink - he wasn't pushed off the ledge, which would constitute "murder", he accidentally fell off.

Incidentally, last year, another guy fell off a balcony at the same dorm, on the same floor, on the same day (but exactly one year later), he didn't die though, just broke a bunch of bones - and he wasn't a fraternity guy, he was a pot-head/stoner. Strange coincidence though.

But is he asian?

No, not asian... Actually, he's a yankee. That's pretty foriegn for UT;)

Back to the original question
Fraternity rush at UT is very informal. Some official events, but really alot of informal parties.

Really, someone DOES have quite a lot of misconceptions about frats don't they. Sources that I am admittedly too lazy to search out DO point out that members of frats have GPA's that are above the student body average. Many frats are centered around social and philanthropic work.

I myself know someone in a frat with a 4.0 on track for pre-med.

As for the OP's intent, I'm going to assume you understand the concept of rushing and bidding. At the very beginning of the school year, there is rush week. Most of the frats have social events or parties. These are mostly widely advertised. However, if you want to rush, you're going to have to single out a few of the frats that you are interested in. Getting a bid requires that you get to know the rush captains well, and being it is august already, it may be a tad late. Thus, it is advisable you set your sights on one or two frats, go to ALL of their events, and make your intentions to rush very clear. Rush week tends to bring out droves of students who go to the parties simply for the sake of partying. Set yourself apart from those people.

UT is socially tough if you participate in nothing at all. However, there is SO very much to participate in at UT! Outside of greek life, there are a huge variety of organizations you can join. Joining a few of these organizations will almost guarantee at least a decent social climate for you. Social ease is not restricted to Greek life at all.

i like halo...

all the good houses already have their pledge classes for the upcoming semester, so the boat has already sailed on this one

Are the frats at UT racial segregated? I ask because I am black and would like to join or be involved in a frat, but I wonder about the racial distribution. I am not unfamiliar with being the only black person, but I wonder do frats practice a tacit segregation or are their the black only frats and white only frats, bc I think I remeber hearing that some frats are segregated.

Or rather I wonder if some frats are segregated?

Stuff like this:

UT Frats, At it Again

Most of the black fraternities are completely black. Most of the IFC fraternities are not entirely white, but they are definitely white dominant. I don't think any fraternity has an official segregation policy though.
