I've heard that greek life is huge at Northwestern, and some people have told me that I shouldn't go there if I don't want to be part of a sorority.

How prevalent is it and would it be fine to go there and not join? Do many people do that?

I'm not in a sorority, but I know a bunch of girls who decided to go through rush. The number sounds large for how many people are in sororitys, but it is different that you'd expect. I know a ton of girls who would never imagine themselves in a sorority, and have now joined. Being in a sorority is just one more group of friends that you can have on campus.

I don't feel like I'm completely missing out on the social scene, either, because i have friends all over campus who I still hang out with.

It's true that Greek life is prominent at NU, but the system is far more laid back than most other schools. I, for one, did join a sorority, but it is not all-consuming. My best friend did not rush, and she doesn't feel like she is missing out on a social life. Do not let the Greek system turn you away from NU. It's a great school and there is life outside of sororities.
