Greek life...questions and concerns

Hello :)

I am seriously considering rushing in the fall (I will be a freshman), however, a few concerns are keeping me from making the commitment to register:

1) Is it all about partying? Because I'm serious about my studies too and hope that this stereotype is not true..?

2) Is it feasible to be in a sorority and have time for other clubs too?

3) Are frat guys *******s and do sorority girls HAVE to spend a lot of time with them?

Thank you!

No, you’re not joining a chapter for partying. If you think that is all a sorority is for, then Greek life probably isn’t for you. Joining a sorority is about sisterhood, philanthropy, leadership, and many, many other things.

Yes. I was in a leadership position in my chapter and was also involved in 2 other on campus orgs and conducted research.

You don’t HAVE to do anything but breathe and pay taxes. Yes, sorority girls do tend to spend more time with fraternity men because we have mixers with them, attend philanthropy events with them, spend time in campus orgs and events with them, etc. However, plenty of Greek women have plenty of independent friends/boyfriends. You’re not joining a cult

soccergurl7988, thanks for answering my questions! that really helped. I definitely don’t think that a sorority is all about partying, but I just wanted to make sure! I had heard from someone that is pretty anti-greek that that’s all it was, and I needed reassurance that it in fact is not!

It’s good to know sorority women can have independent boyfriends and friends because my other worry was that I wouldn’t have time to meet people outside of the sorority.

1) Absolutely not. My fraternity has a higher GPA than the all mens average at our school and we are involved in several philanthropies and charities. Parties are just icing on the cake, something we can enjoy alongside schoolwork.

2) Yes, of course! We have a few people in our fraternity who RUN other clubs and are involved with several different student organizations.

3) No! We are not. A few bad seeds can develop a strong reputation for the whole batch. Also, no sorority is required to hang out with any fraternity or any brother. They just do so because it’s fun and they usually find some good things in common with each other. They also have exchanges, formals, and philanthropy together so it’s easy to meet everybody.

Cool, thank you!!!

One more question…I was looking at the recruitment schedule, and there are recruitment events at the same time as class. What am I supposed to do?

You let your Rho Chi/Rho Gamma/whoever leads your recruitment group and the head of Greek Life know that you won’t be able to attend because of class. That way, the girls can know you weren’t just blowing them off because you didn’t like them.

Definitely let them know. Some schools will kick you out of recruitment if you skip a class for a recruitment event. Most schools will try to schedule your parties around the class if you don’t have a full schedule, but there’s really no guarantee

OK, good to know. I was afraid I would have to skip class or something, which is definitely not an option! Anyways, I’ve made up my mind and am rushing, so thanks to everyone who answered my thread.
