greek life...whats the real deal??

Ok so I'm thinking about rushing at hopkins in the spring, and i've already heard the different stereotypes, or at least I think I have: Theta - go out all the time, phi mu - go out but not as much as theta, alpha phi - go out but not as much as theta/phi mu, kappa - doesnt go out.

I'm a legacy at one of the four of these, but I just wanted to get some students honest opinion of what each sorority is really like...and how they are known on campus.

And then what are the stereotype of the different frats/are there any stereotypes??

There is a lot of information about Hopkins Greek Life on this Hopkins Forums discussion thread:
Hopkins Forums -> Greek Life: Sororities & Fraternities

In my experience, everyone has different opinions of what the various sororities and fraternities at Hopkins are like. I have heard such a mix of opinions from all kinds of people. It really will come down to personal preference if you go through the rush period.

If you want to know more from actual Greek members I suggest these students on the Hopkins Forums:

Julia P. - senior in Alpha Phi
Hopkins Forums -> Meet JHU_Julia

Lauren C. - sophomore in Alpha Phi
Hopkins Forums -> Meet JHU_Lauren

Siobhan C. - sophomore in Kappa Alpha Theta

Andrew L. - senior in Alpha Epsilon Fraternity

And finally, here is a great Guest Blog entry about the rush process at Hopkins:
Hopkins Interactive Guest Blog: My Path to Kappa: Greek Rush at Hopkins

Yah...but I was more wondering about the people that aren't in sororities (girls and guys), what they think of the girls that are in sororities, or what one sorority thinks of the others? And how to guys stereotype them? Like what is the "typical" theta/kappa/alpha phi/phi mu to them?

sororities
phi mu - snobbish
theta - party girls, if ya know what i mean
kappa - other sorority rejects
Alpha Phi - don't hear much about them

frats
pike - they do a lot of coke there
wawa - meatheads, not very intelligent
sae - jerks about letting people into parties
beta - guys who you wouldn't expect to be in a frat
sigma chi - sucks, suspended 2 years ago after halloween in the hood
sigep - game night on thursdays, pretty fun if thats your thing (drinking games for you high schoolers)

note not all of these are the author's opinion but merely how most students "stereotype" them

pretty sure this is what you were looking for

Sororities:
Kappa Alpha Theta (Theta): Best looking girls, party the most, some think they're b**** but most are nice that i know. A lot of athletes.
Phi Mu: 2nd in looks, generally nice. Go out quite a bit.
Alpha Phi: Nice but not the most attractive group. Goes out some.
Kappa Kappa Gamma: Not much to say. Don't go out much. Don't really know anyone in the soroities.

I'd say Theta is the best followed closely by Phi Mu and then Alpha Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Fraternities:

Wawa: Get the sterotypes of meathead. Know a lot of members and I like them. Mostly all football players and a lot of upperclassmen baseball players. Great house.
SAE: Another athletic centered fraternity. Good reputation. Nice house Lot of older baseball players, tennis team rushes here, and upperclassmen wrestlers.
Pike: Not really any athletes. Most regular kids that really like the greek life. Pretty good house.
Fiji: Basketball players rush here if there in a fraternity. Got a lot of wrestlers this year. Some track athletes. Pretty laid back guy.
Sig Ep: Game night on thursday. Know for not charging to get into parties but have to buy beer.
Phi Psi: Big pledge class this year. Most of water polo players pledge here. Laid back guys as well.
AEPI: Known as the jewish fraternity. Thats about all i know.
beta: Would agree with the "guys you wouldn't think would be in a fraternity" comment.
Sigma Chi: Got hurt a lot by the party two years ago. Still trying to rebuild.

I'm not going to get into the rumors about drugs and fraternities. Most of them are rumors. I think there is two or three more fraternities. I think i covered all the groups of people in the fraternities. Lacrosse players can't rush. Baseball can't rush which started this past year. Most of the older ones are in Wawa or SAE. Swimmers aren't suppose to rush either. Soccer players weren't allowed to rush i believe since two years ago. Most of the older soccer players are in fiji though.

hswrestling's post summs it up pretty well. Here's my take

Frats:
Wawa - Almost entirely football players, and all but four or five players from the team aren't in the frat. Huge house, but close to campus, right next door to Pike
Pike - Close to campus, frequently has parties, good basement, lots of fun. Just had a great pledge class this past year.
Fiji - Used to be the big frat on campus back in the late 80's, but doesn't have a house anymore, which makes it hard to get noticed (not having a house is nearly a death sentence)
Beta - Close to campus, has good parties. Brothers are very chill, and have a solid house. Had no seniors this past year since they all went to AEPi.
AEPi - The Jewish frat, great group of kids. The problem is that their house is in a residential area and neighbors always call the cops on their parties.
SAE - Far away from campus and don't have great parties. Basement is always packed to the point where its not a good thing. Problem is that Loyola and Towson kids keep showing up at their parties. Had a small pledge class this past year.
Phi Psi - Water Jerks (i mean polo players) pledge here and they did have a huge pledge class this year. Smoke a lot of herb, but had a great party with live music this year.
Sig Ep - Huge frat, great house, constant parties and game night. In my opinion had a pledge class with a lot of jerks.
Sig Chi - Were banned for a party, and are recovering. Parties are 'alright'.L
Lambda - Asian frat. Have never heard of them having a party. May or may not have house - virtually no presence on campus.

Sorrorities in my mind are an enigma. They don't have houses, and it just seems like you're paying to be friends with people with certain handbags. You can read all about that on jhuconfessions.com
I don't know that much about the sorrorities themselves, but here's my take
Kappa - Hot attractive girls and athletes. "popular" sorrority
Phi Mu - Kappa but not as extreme.
APhi - Some fugly girls, mostly very nice though
Kappa - Not heavy partiers, moderate girls, some good looking

As far as athletics and frats, Hopkins athletes tend to have more fun than the average student. Its very noticable at Hopkins. So many non athletes join frats as a way to emulate that fun, which is fine. But then again, I think the school may be trying to prevent another wawa* from developing by not allowing athletes in certain sports to pledge.
*wawa, being all football players, has a noticeably poor reputation.

i think you meant theta for that first kappa godlovesme, not to knock kappa but they're definitely not the "popular" sorority

So… what’s gonna happen now that Theta is gone? Are there just going to be huge pledge classes bc there are only 3 sororities now? Or will it just be more selective? And what are the other Thetas going to do while there is no Theta?

Or well wait—more than 3  I forgot about the multicultural sororities.

On the 5% chance you’re not a ■■■■■, here are my two cents -

Non-Greeks don’t really pay much attention to the Greek scene here, especially after the beginning of freshman year… My general impression of the sorority girls here is that they are either melodramatic cokeheads or rather boring, but not total bimbos. Less obnoxious than frat bros. More or less the same kinds of girls in all sororities, although those in smaller sororities are more likely to actually be friends with each other. If you want to rush, then rush, and pick a sorority based on whether you’d like to hang out with the girls in it.

For the love of god, please don’t join a sorority based on what guys think. Any dude who judges your dateworthiness based on whether you’re in a sorority/what sorority you’re in is TOXIC. Stay away! You really don’t have to deal with these kinds of idiots at Hopkins if you don’t want to. I promise.

Curious: one word of caution—be careful of the nasty, snide, or bitter-sounding comments. These usually come from students with an axe to grind. Check it out for yourself. In my experience, the sororities and fraternities have great members, with a variety of interests. The GPAs maintained in these houses are generally quite high, and most, if not all, are involved in some sort of community service. Have fun!

Greek life at Hopkins can be the most rewarding or devastating endeavor you may experience as an undergraduate. The superficiality of rush brings out the worst in people, both for the guys and the girls. My advice, though, is that if you decide to rush–choose the fraternity or sorority where you feel most comfortable and not what is “hot” or “cool.” I know that can be difficult based on the stereotypes you hear around campus, but when it comes right down to it, no one really gives a **** if you’re hot in the ugly sorority–you’re still hot. Or worse yet, you could be “the ugly girl” in the hot sorority. Pick your poison.

If you make your choice based on what everyone else wants, you will end up extremely disappointed because not only will hate the people in your sorority/fraternity (even if they are “cool” by everyone else’s standards), you will regret not choosing the group with whom you felt most comfortable and could have actually formed substantial friendships. Each group has its pros and cons, and that being said, as a female involved in greek life, here’s my two cents:

Phi Mu - some really attractive girls, but the overwhelming *****iness from some of the girls is a turn off for a lot of people

Kappa - sweet, down to earth girls; last two pledge classes were decent looks-wise

Alpha Phi - pretty attractive on the whole, becoming a bit more edgy; they seem to care a lot about who is “the best” on campus

Pi Phi - quirky and sweet; they are new so…yeah

Incoming freshmen: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not listen to what “people say” because usually, people are often misinformed. MEET PEOPLE in greek life–go to events, ask questions–and determine who you see yourself calling a brother/sister.

There have been a lot of entries about Greek Life on Hopkins Interactive, especially lately as a number of the current students went through spring rush:
