Some of the schools I'm applying to have a medium to large greek community, and I really don't know if it's something I would like or dislike right now. Really, I don't know much about the greek system, how joining is handled, and what it's like to live with these people. Is anyone here in a frat? Why do people join up? Or is anyone close to someone in a frat/sorrority that can shed some light on what exactly it is that they do or are around for? Any sort of general information, for now, would be appreciated.

A friend of mine here at Berkeley is in a sorority. It is an incredible time commitment, she is doing 4-5 different things per week, from meetings to parties and event and going into the city (San Francisco). Here during Welcome Week, and I think they have it in the spring also, where you can go around to all the different greeks and learn about them, and see which ones you want to pledge. Then there are initiation type events, sort of like try-outs...then the greeks let you know if they want you as a member, and you choose from the ones that have asked you to join. Good luck!

Yea I am in a frat at UVM. We dont really have a big Greek scene here something like 8% of the university. But its still wicked fun. You'll meet a ton of new people. Just go to rush events and try and meet as many of the members as possible. If they like you then you'll get a bid and become a pledge. Im pretty sure most houses let you back out if you dont feel like you want to do it but its a commitment and fun at the same time.
