I have a huge interest in the school, but I heard a lot about the emphasis on greek life and the fraternities and sororities. As a high school female, I'm not exactly the most girly or preppy girl in the school. I don't place a high importance on popularity, I don't dress girly (I more or less prefer to be comfortable), and I don't understand exactly how to be a "girl" the right way lol. Would I be miserable if I went to Vanderbilt?

I’m a high school female, and I’m pretty similar to what you described. I don’t plan on joining greek life either. I was a little concerned at first, but Vanderbilt is only 60% Greek meaning the other 40% aren’t. I think we’ll be okay :)

You’ll be fine. Do give Greek life a chance though. There are a lot of sororities and each has a different personality. Joining can really be a life changing experience.

I never planned on going Greek, but I rushed and had an awesome time. I still ended up deciding Greek life wasn’t for me, but it’s definitely worth checking out

Granted fraternity rush involves partying with the brothers and having fun while sorority rush sounds like a nightmare

I think you got the greek representation mixed up. I believe it’s actually around 40% IFC greek and 60% non-greek. I think it’s 50% of women in sororities and 33% in fraternities. The 60% might be if you include the various non-IFC fraternities, i.e. business, christian, music, etcetera fraternities.

How competitve is sorority rush? I’ve heard such horror stories about colleges in the south if you’re not from the south.

If you want to be in a sorority, you’ll get into a sorority. Most don’t get their original top choice, but pretty much everyone ends up with a sorority they like.

The top sororities are pretty darn competitive though. It’s not about being from the south at all. It’s just about having a decent GPA and having a fun/outgoing personality. And, well, being attractive, for the top sororities at least.

Is being in a sorority expensive?

I think they’re like $700-$1000 per semester? Costs a little more the first semester though.
