Is greek life a huge deal at CMU? If you aren't in a sorority/fraternity then is it difficult to party? At some schools, if you aren't in a sorority then you are kind of on the outs socially. Is that how it is at Carnegie Mellon? Please just give me all the information you can about the social life and structure at CMU especially regarding greek life and any additional information on greek life at CMU in general would be much appreciated.

are you looking for a school with no or a very low levels of greek life or one with lots of it? just curious

I’m looking for a school with less greek life because I’m pretty sure I don’t want to be in a sorority but i still want to have fun in college, and at schools where greek life is huge, if you arent in a sorority its weird.

While the Greek scene isn’t that huge at CMU, I think they have a disproportionate amount of power in the student government. It’s mostly because non-affiliated students don’t have any interest in running for stuff, so the Greek students will fill that hole.

That said, there’s no need to go Greek in order to find parties or have a good time around campus. House parties are really popular, often happening along Beeler St. adjacent to campus. If you don’t want to party party there’s still a ton of clubs that do their own thing. There are also groups like Fringe for people that want to get involved in Buggy or build something for the Carnival Midway, but don’t want to be in a Greek organization.

I’d say about 10-20% of my friends were in Greek organizations, but they didn’t treat us any different because we chose not to join one.

rice university and Hendrix college have zero frats. both are for the same type who would like cmu(imo)
but I would highly highly recommend CMU it is an amazing school.
