So I recently was accepted into IU, and I'm just curious about whether or not I should join Greek life if I go there. I've heard so many different things about how the sororities are super competitive, and theyre also really expensive so i'm not sure if I could afford it (I already have to pay out of state anyway!), but I know that greek life is super popular at IU. Do you have to be in a sorority to enjoy the nightlife? I'm worried that I wouldn't get all the opportunities to enjoy IU's top party school reputation.

You absolutely do not need to join a sorority or fraternity to enjoy a social life at IU. As for being “super popular,” I don’t necessarily think that is true. I do think that because it is relatively easy to identify members of the Greek community, (houses and frequently seen wearing Greek letters), it may seem like that. It is a group of organizations that is self-promoting and visible.

Neither my D (now graduated) and my S (a current student) was/is part of the Greek community. Both enjoy/ed a very active social life that suited their needs. That is what is most important: you find the social life that meets your needs and still allows you to meet your academic goals. That maybe Greek or maybe not.
