Greek Life!

Hey everyone! I was just wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what sororities are like at UVA. Are they accessible to low-income students? Do they tend to be kinda snobby? Does all of this vary greatly by sorority? Thanks in advance :slight_smile:

I don’t know anything about sorority dues at UVa. However, I believe there is a rule that they must discuss the costs in advance with prospects. The costs probably vary greatly between house.

When considering the costs of a fraternity or sorority, you need to consider net total costs. For instance, living in the house may be much cheaper than living in an apartment. If the house requires or offers a meal plan, that needs to be considered - it may be cheaper than other options. Also, dues typically pay for some social activities and food. If you would not be part of a Greek organization, you would be paying out of pocket for other social activities and food.

My son’s fraternity at UVa had an added fee from the national of a couple hundred dollars a year per person to pay for liability insurance. My daughter’s sorority (at another college) did not have that type of fee. Her sorority was able to reduce their dues when they had a large pledge class.

I believe there are some Greek organizations that offer some limited scholarships towards dues for people who have extreme difficulty paying for it.

The most important issue is that is that it is easier to develop lifelong bonds with people when you are living and socializing in the same house. It also provides a nice location to reconnect with old friends into the future.

@Charliesch Thanks so much! :slight_smile:
