Greek Life

I am an incoming freshman, and I was just wondering what greek life is like at Cal Poly. Especially how rush is for sororities. I haven’t found too much on it on Youtube (aside from SLADE), so any info is much appreciated

Hi there! Congrats on getting into Cal Poly. Formal Recruitment AKA Rush usually takes place during the first week of school (or second week), I recommend going to the panhellenic website to check the dates. Each sorority is unique in its special way, I recommend doing lots of research of their respective websites online. They also have different groups of girls. For instance, in my sorority there were the girls would were more involved in ASI, others in New Student and Transitions Program, others in band, others in honors, others grouped up little study sessions, others went out to either DT (21+) or frat parties, etc. Most sororities at Poly have a diverse balance of girls with different academic backgrounds. Going through formal recruitment is very stressful for girls who are interested in joining as well as sisters in the sorority, as we prepare very thoroughly for at least 2 months to meet our new sisters- that being said, there are many different events, such as philanthropy day to pref night. I recommend buying a diverse wardrobe, rompers, sundresses, accessories, shoes. If you get heels, I recommend breaking in your heels, or buying lots of moleskin and bandaids, as you will be walking A LOT, San Luis Obispo is very hilly. Another piece of advice for rush is to BE YOURSELF and HAVE AN OPEN MIND!! During my time at Poly (I’m an alumna), it was heartbreaking seeing freshmen girls running to the dorms in tears because they got dropped from the sorority of their dreams. For instance, you might want to be in Alpha Gamma Delta, but throughout the process, you realize you fit in better with the girls in Alpha Chi Omega. Or vice versa. If formal recruitment is too much for you, I recommend doing informal recruitment later in the quarter or early Winter quarter, as SOME sororities set that up, usually KKG, Theta, Alpha Gam, AEPhi have informal recruitment. I believe Delta Gamma is starting a chapter at Cal Poly this upcoming winter quarter as well. Hope this helps!
