Greek life

Ive heard so many horrible stories about rush and greek life at southern schools, syracuse..etc.
are there any schools where you dont have to drink till you puke during rush week? any schools where there are NICe girls in the sororities?

Good lord... Stop watching Animal House. waahh wahhhh

a couple of my suitemates were in sororities here at carolina, and they're both super nice girls. the friends they brought around from their sororities also seemed pretty sweet. i've definitely met sorority girls who aren't so nice, though--it just depends on which one you pledge.
my suitemates also said that hazing REALLY is prohibited--they couldn't even force pledges to wear their pledge pins around everywhere because that was too much hazing..

hazing depends on the school and campus. hazing is mostly not allowed, and if you have a problem with hazing you can always go up to the authorities.

Hazing DEF doesn't happen during rush week. Maybe during pledge ship and all...but rush is super strict. And you probably won't have to drink till you puke...at least not forcefully :) Every school is different, get a feel for the Greek Life and see if it's for you.

My S is in a fraternity at UMiami and he had no hazing or anything like that. There is a no hazing policy at the school.

every school and state has a "no hazing" policy, that does not mean it doesn't happen.

but nothing will happen "during" rush week, 12:01AM on the first non rush day after rush week is fair game though

every national organization has one too. You're right diesel, it's up to the chapter to follow the rules or risk being dismantled. The vast, vast majority of chapters do follow those rules.

hazing is also not unique by any means to greek life. In fact at a lot of schools, the athletic teams are far worse than the Greeks.

I go to Georgia Tech, which is a southern school. All houses are required to be dry during rush week. I don’t think Georgia Tech is unique with respect to this rule, so there should be NO schools where you have to drink until you puke.

as someone said before, you dont get hazed during rush, only pledgeship

Many people find horrible stories (when they're not about them or people they care about) much more interesting than nice stories, so of course you're going to hear them more often. Moreover, once you have a general idea of what typical behavior is for a group of people, you're more likely to notice information that supports your beliefs.

If you want to rush, rush. If the women don't seem like nice people, go find nice people somewhere else. Otherwise, choose a sorority that you think would be a good fit for you. If you have unpleasant experiences during pledging, quit and go find nice people who won't do those things somewhere else. If, after pledging, you find out that you don't like life in that sorority, quit and go live a life you like doing something else.

I suppose that it's possible that everyone involved in Greek life today is just a horrible person. I don't know any Greeks so I don't know any nice ones. But I think it is more likely that people in sororities, like people everywhere, are a pretty diverse bunch in many ways, but that the more outrageous ones are the ones who get talked about.

Sigh. Topic 1000000000000 and 2 about this. But you actually ask a slightly different question. You'll find at most schools, there are plenty of nice girls in sororities. Don't believe all the hype. Don't believe all the stereotypes. The end.

fabrizio, GT is definitely not unique regarding dry rush

Hazing isn't allowed but it happens. You shouldn't worry about sororities but frats will do it to you but it's all very secretive. At UNC all the frats technically don't do hazing but I have several friends who were drawn to certain extremes during hell week. In other words, it happens.....behind closed doors
