Okay, before a little while ago I never in a million years would have thought myself the type to join a sorority, but I realized I was being kind of narrow-minded, so.... How is the Greek life at Cal? What kind of people join sororities? And maybe I'm just being paranoid, but seriously do people get hazed in a bad way ever? I'm not against embarrassing myself but I've heard major horror stories about hazing and I guess I just don't want to go through that..... Plus, I'm not very outgoing and I'm a total dork but I like to be with fun, interesting people, and I figure rushing would be a great way to meet people my first year. Soo is anyone here a greek? What do you think about it all? Thanks! :)

Anyone and everyone can join a sorority or fraternity. Hazing is overstated, and does not happen at all in sororities. It can be borderline sometimes in frats, but mostly its just mind@%!ks and trust exercises.

From what I've heard, if you pledge a sorority, you get lots of free stuff. Don't know much more than that though. Rush and find out if its for you. It cheeses me off that a lot of people won't even consider the greek system because of the media image.

asian frats truly haze- touching/hitting pledges is not allowed but there are physical things which make a lot of people depledge

Asian frats are different. Wasn't thinking about them, but yes I heard they can be a bit rough. I don't know how much of it is actually true.

My friend is the president of an asian frat and he said they dont haze worth a damn, They just scream at you a whole lot or some crap like that.

The major panhellenic sororities don't haze.

that's good to hear, but how is it different from the dorms? do most people get along most of the time or is there a lot of drama?

I heard sororities can get catty sometimes, but they for the most part, get along. Fraternities can be the same way, people argue and get in fights. It's part of life. Dorms are similarly a mixed bag and it really depends who you floor with.

Living in them twice, I can say it all depends on the mixture of people. My first dorm, there was a real split (and of course, being an outgoing person, not so much anymore though, I got caught in the middle because I generally don't take sides in petty crap and ended up screwed in the end) between three groups of people who absolutely HATED each other. My floor second year, we all got along great and it was wonderful, if a bit noisy, but it was good noisy, not screaming fights and trying to drown out each others music at 3:30 in the morning noisy.

But don't worry about getting along with everybody or being everyone's friend. There are simply some people you are not going to mesh with.
