Are incoming freshman encouraged to rush in the Fall? Those out there who currently belong to a sorority - do you have any thoughts on this? I would think Fall would be a difficult time to rush given all that is going on adjusting to a new campus. Do many people rush in the spring? Trying to determine which is the better time to get involved in Greek life.

For sororities, rush is only in fall. No Spring rush that I know of, but there might be 1 or 2 that do.

Here’s the info for fall. http://www.ufpanhellenic.com/page.php?page_id=109275&parent_id=109272

yes pretty much all sororities rush exclusively in fall. I would DEFINITELY recommend it. spring only very limited sororities (the “unattractive” ones) have rush and it is harder rushing as a sophomore. I would say just try it in fall, and if you dont like it, there is no commitment. but if you don’t you will feel left out (probably… don’t want to make huge generalizations but this is what i think).

I definitely recommend doing sorority recruitment as a freshman. It is difficult (but doable) if you didn’t attend summer B, since you are also adjusting to the campus and college life at the same time. Recruitment week is VERY stressful and many girls drop out before the end but the ones who stick it out tend to be very glad that they did. Greek life is wonderful at UF. It makes a huge school seem smaller and more personable.

My daughter went through recruitment as a sophomore and wished that she had done it sooner. When she arrived at UF in the Fall of her freshman year she was sure that she was not the sorority type and had no interest in recruitment. By the spring of her freshman year she felt that she had made a mistake by not looking into the Greek scene. She had made friends at UF but had not found her niche.

She felt at a big disadvantage rushing as a sophomore (some sororities only want to recruit freshman). Ultimately though, she found a home in sorority that she feels comfortable in and is very very happy. She has made wonderful friends who she feels are truly her sisters. She is reluctant to graduate and leave UF next year.
