ill be going to UMD in the fall, and im interested in joining a frat.. the site at UMD is UM Councils and Chapters

i have no knowledge at all about these different chapters/councils and whatnot so can any1 give me a quick breakdown ?? lol im Korean, but im looking to join a somewhat diverse fraternity if there are any that exist.. i dont want to be in an all Asian frat or all white frat cultural diversity is important to me but i dont know the differences between all these different frats

The link in your post leads to a list of recognized chapters at the University of Maryland.
First are the IFC chapters. These are Historically-White membership Men’s Fraternities. Next are the PHA chapters, which are Historically-White membership Women’s Sororities. Third are the PHC chapters, which are (with the exception of Lambda Theta Alpha, which is a predominately-Latina Sorority) Historically-Black membership Fraternities and Sororities. Last listed are the UGC chapters, which appear to be Asian, Latino, Indian-Subcontinental, and Multicultural Fraternities and Sororities.

Once school starts, go to the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and inquire about which Fraternities are on campus and fit your needs.

Once you get to school, go out a lot and frequent the frat parties. You’ll get a feel for the personality of each frat and find out which one has members you’ll like or get along with.

hey. im korean also and a student at Purdue right now. i’m a brother of alpha sigma phi here also. its dominately all white, but honestly it doesnt matter. what really matters is how you like the feel of the house and the brothers. when i came to the house at first I was abit like “noo…” but after meeting the brothers and all I decided to pledge. I think its one of the best decisions I’ve done and had no regrets. You should just look around house to house during rush or parties and see which ones you like. There might be a few houses that might have a few asians also if you want diversity. Here at Purdue, Sigma Pi seems to be 50/50 on canadians and asians so yeah, it shows there are diverse fraternity houses out there. It’s also not a cultural fraternity, its part of IFC. Since I’m a brother of Alpha Sigs, you should give Alpha Sigma Phi a look while your there since I know theres a chapter at UMD. I believe its on Frat Row like most of the other houses but yeah.
