Greek life

So i'm considering joining a sorority and I know that Greek life at UF is HUGE. Aside from making these bonds with a group of people, what are the advantages of being Greek? Also, I hear that your "brothers" or "sisters" end up becoming your main group of friends, and that it's hard to have other friends since its pretty time-consuming. Is there some truth to this statement?

Any advice helps! Thanks :)

greek life is only huge if you’re involved with it; the UF community is huge in general, so its easy to miss the greek influence, especially if you dont follow student government. it is what you make it.

that rings true for almost everything in college, and your other impressions are no different. a lot of people dont hang out with people outside of their organization much, but many people have most of their friends outside of it rather than the other way around. a lot of it has to do with who you know going in, and what other things you participate in.

also, from my experience, its very difficult to have a lot of friends you hang out with regularly just because of how time consuming school is. that could definitely be a factor in determining how far outside of greek you go.

I am currently in a sorority at UF. I actually didn’t rush as a freshman, but after seeing a lot of my friends in their chapters and how much they loved it, I decided to go through recruitment as a sophomore. It was hands down one of the best decisions I have made in my time at UF.

I never had problems having friends outside of my chapter. My roommates are not Greek, and I love them dearly and hang out with them all the time. Yes, it’s easy to spend all your time with people in your chapter, but it’s not the norm.

As far as advantages, there are a lot. Involvement is a huge one. In addition to being able to get involved within your sorority, a lot of sorority women are involved in activities on campus. I know that in my sorority, we talk about involvement opportunities at our weekly chapter meetings. There is always, always something to do. I can always find a friend who is going out, or watching a movie in the house, or going to the gym, anything.

I would definitely give going Greek a chance. There are 16 chapters at UF, and all of them have something great to offer.
