Just curious about what the general feeling was on campus towards a couple of different fraternities I was considering:

Theta Chi
Phi Delta Theta
Psi Upsilon
Delta Chi

Any help?

Thanks,
GF

WITH REGARD TO RUSH, GO TO EACH HOUSE, MEET THE BROTHERS IN A SOBER SETTING, AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. That said, as a member of a Fraternity, I will give you ar relatively unbiased description of those houses which interest you.

Theta Chi: One of the top fraternities on campus, though not as big as the former Beta or SAE. They have a lot of east coasters but continue to pull the top sororities. Last year the pregamed with Tri Delt, and this year they pregame with Kappa.

Phi Delt: They are a dry house, but have a lot of really good guys. They just got a house on state street for pre game, which is huge for them. They have a really close brotherhood and are liked by nearly everyone. Their house is also nice inside, since they don't have parties.

Psi U: Very chill, laid back house. They have guys from all around and usually have fun parties. They party with good sororities, namely Sigma Kappa and AXO. They were pre party partners with AXO a few years back.

Delta Chi: Up and coming. They recolonized a few years ago and have made incredible strides. They are getting people on IFC eboard, remodeling their house, getting huge pledge classes, and establishing relations with sororities. Look for them to continue to move up in the Greek system.

Based on those houses, it seems like you want a medium sized, chill house without much douchebaggery. Some others to consider are Delta Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Delta Phi, Chi Phi, and Sigma Nu. Good luck with rush!

Echoing my previous post, I highly recommend Theta Chi. A bunch of solid guys.

Thanks for the help and recommendations!

I'm not 100% set on going Greek quite yet but you pretty much nailed what I'm looking for: a tighter-knit community with some respectable brothers that aren't total jerks.

In re: joining a dry house: is that much of a problem? Are most of the Greek parties still accessible? I'd love to live in a nice home and go party somewhere else and let them deal with the mess :)

what about the SigEps. I know nationally they are about "balance man" and usually are known for good academics

Any opinions/info about these frats:

SAE
Chi Phi
Chi Psi
Phi Kappa Psi
Sig Ep

The only one I know not to do is the one with the volleyball court next to the Union.

Shady phi is the name?

SAE: probably the best/frattiest house on campus. They are one of the most selective, party with the hottest girls (Alpha Phi, Tri Delt, Kappa, Sigma Kappa, etc), and have the frattiest guys. They also host and usually win Mudbowl. They are pregame partners with Sigma Kappa

Chi Phi: Chill/laid back house with a lot of potheads, they do OK with sororities and have some solid guys.

Chi Psi: kind of dorky guys, but house is nice and in a great location, party with mediocre sororities (ADPi, Pi Phi) but have some reasonably cool guys. They are pregame partners with Pi Phi.

Phi Kappa Psi: Almost, if not as top tier as SAE. They tend to be more east coast/Jewish than SAE, but have a fair amount of southerners. They are very selective They are pretty fratty and party with ONLY top tier sororities. They have like 4 members on IFC eboard They are pregame partners with Alpha Phi.

SigEp- considered by many to be tools, but have some cool guys. They do relatively well with sororities, and they are pregaming with DG. They won fraternity of the year several years ago and are really involved around campus. Their house is next to the union, but they will lose it next year when Sigma Chi comes back. The balanced man program is very unfratty.

ADPhi-volleyball court Fraternity, very laid back, chill, with a lot of good guys. They were screwed over for like 3 years straight because of social infractions, so they are rebuilding sorority relations. Look for them to get better. They pregame with ADPi.

Anyone else got any opinions (other then confusedude - no offense, but just looking for some other opinions as well)?

I don't know much about fraternities, but I have a lot of friends at phidelt, so i go there often. There house is really nice (bc of the no parties) but they do still drink upstairs/roof and such, just not on the main floor. They guys are amazing and so much fun, it's small enough that you can know everyone and they have a very tight brotherhood. Their party house on state street is pretty awesome as well. Thats just my 2 cents.

my statements aren't just my opinions...they are the general impression within the greek community. I have personal opinions of each of those houses that I will not share publically

FIJI?
Psi U?

Psi U: Very chill, laid back house. They have guys from all around and usually have fun parties. They party with good sororities, namely Sigma Kappa and AXO. They were pre party partners with AXO a few years back.

FIJI: Make strides each year, though some say they are becoming too big. They have won Fraternity of the Year twice in a row and are very involved in campus. They are perceived by some as tools who try too hard to be fratty (though not as bad as PIKE), but they nevertheless party with the top sororities-Alpha Phi, Sigma Kappa, DG, etc. They like to wear their letters ALL THE TIME. Their Islander party is considered one of the best on campus (along with DKEs tahitian). They are very structured and highly organized. They are selective but usually have huge pledge classes.

Psi U is my favorite frat to party at... they do have a reputation for being heavy weed smokers, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.... just depends on if you're into that

confuseddude,
What makes a sorority "top"?

generally...the attractiveness of the girls. However, because the overall attractiveness of girls at Michigan is not very good, there will be unattractive girls in top tier sororities. Likewise, many of the "lower tier" sororities have decent looking girls. So, reputation is also significant. I'll give you a breakdown of the sorority tiers

Tier 1: Kappa Kappa Gamma, Tri Delt, Alpha Phi
Tier 1.5: Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Kappa, Chi Omega
Tier 2: Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Sigma Delta Tau
Tier 3: Alpha Delta Pi, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Phi Epsilon
worst: Alpha Gamma Delta

wow. that must suck for alpha gamma delta!

AGD is also known as Alpha Graba Donut

Can someone tell me a bit more about Phi Delta Theta. The website says it's located at 1437 Washtenaw but a previous poster said they also have a "party house" on State Street? Why is a "party house" necessary if they already have a house? Also, do you think this is a house that someone who likes to party on the weekends (including alcohol) should NOT consider. I've got a son who would probably find the kids in a house like this refreshing, but I also know he definitely would not want his weekends to be dry. I'm sure he'll figure all this out on his own, but right now I'm a curious parent!

parties are so stupid. I mean, they would be great if people weren't really really drunk all the time.
