Greek roundup rumor

my D is planning on going to Austin this weekend to check out the school and wants to attend greek roundup. She heard a rumor that the university is clamping down on HS seniors attending the parties. Is this true and what is going on. Also, we are from Ca. and do not know any greek students. How do you go about attending events. Just show up? Advise please

All greek organizations have off campus housing so the university is extremely limited in their influence of their affairs. Some fraternities are not even recognized by the university yet still do fine. Roundup is essentially a weekend of parties, there’s very little in the way of formal get-to-know-you type stuff.

Her best bet is to contact any friends she might have who are currently at UT. From a sorority standpoint, there isn’t much to worry about. Roundup is the unofficial start of rush; she still has all summer (orientation is a big part) to meet girls. Sorority rush is also very different in that its formal and very well organized. She can go into rush knowing only a few girls and not be too worried.

Overall, roundup is just parties, enjoy them for that. And crawfish.

I want to rush a fraternity next year and I know it’s less organized than the sororities…

I don’t know anyone in the fraternity system at UT but I am interested in SAE because a lot of my friends have gone the their parties in the past. I searched facebook for “Texas
SAE” and ended up messaging a couple of the guys who gave me the name of the rush captain. I then searched the rush captain and now am on the FIJI list…so tell your daughter to try facebook!

I just asked my son about this and he said he hasn’t heard anything regarding any special crackdown. Parties are on as usual.

But, every year the TABC are looking to bust underage drinkers - so be alert.

I checked the Panhellenic Council FAQ list and there is nothing there about Round Up - it must be too “unofficial” - sorry! [Office of the Dean of Students - Greek Life and Intercultural Education - Joining an Organization - UPC FAQs](http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/glie/join_upc_faq.php)

You should know that alumna recommendations are ESSENTIAL for sorority recruitment. Your daughter can contact the local alumnae Panhellenic association (refer to [National Panhellenic Conference: NPC NEWS](http://www.npcwomen.org/) for more information) - if she provides information to them, they can contact alumnae of the sororities to write recommendations. This is also the time to work the network of women - church, teachers, wives of business colleagues, etc. Let them know she is interested in joining a sorority.

Is it just Greek organizations doing Round Up or are there other groups that’ll be there too?

It is just a Greek parties weekend. This is not to be confused with the official UT - Roundup which has already been held.

Admitted Students Roundup was March 7.
[Admitted Longhorn Round Up | Meet Us | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/meetus/events/roundup/index.html)

And that Roundup is nothing like this Roundup ;)

Crawfish and live music anyone?

It’s run by the Interfraternity Council.
High school students are “officially” not allowed to come to Roundup, as it’s “officially” not a recruiting event.
It’s been that way for many, many years now.
It will go on as it has in the past.
TABC will be out in full force–so if you are a minor underage drinking may not be the best choice.

However, she won’t be able to get a wristband officially without a college ID. However, many fraternity guys get multiple wristbands so they can give them to HS kids, and the guys handing them out will be fraternity guys, so if your daughter approaches one and gives an excuse like “I left my UT ID at home,” she will probably get a wristband anyways. This is all, of course, unofficial because high school kids aren’t supposed to come to roundup.
