Greek/social life at SMU

@snorkelmom Thanks so much. It sounds like your D had amazing opportunities! I was wondering about the letters of rec. Did all the writers know your D personally? That’s my big worry. I didn’t belong to a sorority and the women I know didn’t either. I guess we would have to ask around. I just wonder how it impacts a girl if the letter writers are strangers for the most part. Thanks again.

Not at all. Some of them didn’t even know me. It’s just a formality. That was actually my daughter’s role during recruitment this year, to find recs for those that didn’t have them. You can contact an alumni chapter for “X” in your hometown and they will provide one. Just remind her to keep an open mind. When you start labeling people like NuScholar above, that’s when you run into trouble.

Thank you so much . This is so helpful@snorkelmom
Anyone who has done any research knows that SMU is a great school on many levels. One naysayer can’t ruin that! Some people have axes to grind.

Precisely. Some people have axes to grind and sexist comments to make. Trying to gauge the academic reputation of a university based upon the number of Rhodes scholars it produces and the personal choices of one female graduate (who graduated decades ago) makes absolutely no logical sense.

would also like to point out those business school rankings reflect grad school not undergraduate work. Undergrads were 21 in us news and 17 in poets and quants. We also kecep rising. Grad program has not been the focus though i believe it should be with most scholarships going to undergraduates. We have a new dean coming in who will likely being shifting the focus back to the mba’s because our undergraduate program is where i have met some of the smartest people/ my fellow classmates.

Exactly - SMU BBA is among the best in the country and ranked well ahead of UT Dallas and any other school in Texas except UT, and they are right on UT’s heels. SAT scores for the BBA are ranked as tied for fourth in the country (above UT), so the rise will continue. MBA is strong and also on the rise. Too many advantages to be in Dallas and also the SMU connections to think about anywhere else is you want to go to a Texas university.
