What's the Greek/ social life at WashU like? I am going to be a senior in high school this coming year, and I am looking into WashU. I hear that Greek life is big here--my question is, if I didn't rush, would I still have normal friends or would I become a social pariah? Please feel free to tell me anything about the Greek/ social life that you feel is pertinent. I would greatly appreciate it!

There are PLENTY of people who don’t rush. I didn’t but several of my best friends did. And we are still best friends. From what I’ve observed, there’s no stigma attached to either being in a fraternity/sorority or not being in one.

So long as you find something you really like at washu (club, sport, greek life, a random group that plays ultimate together, whatever), you’ll be fine. And there is a club for anything, so you’re fine on that front.

Also note- there are several greek organizations that are not social fraternities. There’s APO (the co-ed service fraternity), AXE (chemistry), DSP (business), and several others (some are only open to upperclassmen, like the engineering one).

The fact that Wash U is well under 50% Greek should reassure you that you are fine if you choose not to rush. Greek life is not insignificant, but compared to some other schools it is definitely not a socially dominating factor.
