I really want to study in the US. Any comment will be really useful. Almost forget, I will apply for financialaid ( can afford about 28,000$ per year)

Almost forget, I will apply for financialaid ( can afford about 28,000$ per year)

hmmm…when I see students post that they’re applying for financial aid, but they can afford $28k, I wonder what the colleges are going to say their families can afford.

Keep in mind that schools look at your parents’ income and assets and they don’t care if you say that you can only afford $28k. Colleges may say that your family can afford $45k (or whatever).

Are you applying to any financial safety schools? These are schools that would give you enough merit scholarship money for your stats, so that your costs would be affordable ($28k or well below)?

Thanks for your reply mom2collegekids.
My family can afford only 28k (based on tax forms and family income) so I think there’s not gonna be a problem with that.

However, I want your opinion about my chances to these schools. Is my profile good enough? Do I need something more? What are my chances, anyway? I feel I am heading in the dark. I do not know other students applying to these colleges and I am kind of ignorant about what students are admitted. Got my point?

If you can raise the SAT, you’ll be in great shape. If not perhaps add Bowdoin and Bates which are SAT optional.

What mom2 means is that often schools think a family can afford far more than the family thinks it can. They will look at income and assets and they assume you will pay with savings in addition to income.

Well, my counselor told me that international students are in more favorable condition about the SAT CReading and writing section, because english is not their native language. Is that true?
Also, I know that Oberlin has these standards for international applicants:
3.7 GPA (which approximately 92.5%)
CR 630-730
M 710-790
W 640-710
Which I think is a bit lower than US students. Though I’m not sure…
Anyway, what do you think is a good score for SAT verbal for these colleges? (I know 700 is excellent but something more feasible, if possible)

****LACs take into great consideration SAT writng??? Which universities do not??

IMPORTANT*** Should I send SATMATHII? I got 640… But in MATHI i got 730… Is it better to send both of them or not?

And finally, Middlebury’s SAT scores that mom2collegekids provided, show the scores of the middle 50%, aren’t they. I mean the lowest 25% may have from 590 to 650…

Keep in mind that Middlebury publishes the SAT I scores for all applicants, regardless of whether they were used in admissions. Many of these SAT I scores were not used to make an admissions decision (like if the student chose to submit 3 SAT IIs or the ACT), but the scores are counted in the profile. In other words, many of the low SAT I scorers at Middlebury used another test to gain acceptance, but the college eventually publishes their scores along with the others, thereby making the averages appear lower.

Also, could anyone suggest a safety college.
Based on my profile I would like to apply to a college where I will have a at least 80% chance to admitted and get financial aid… If possible to be good in biology and offer neuroscience courses…
Anything in mind???

Thanks Arcadia, that makes sense.
So,hoping that my SATII scores are ok (biologym 750, math I 730), my low writing scores may not affect my application…? However they aren’t from different areas… Are they gonna count allong with my SatII scores?

****And is there any college that put more emphasis on GPA and Class rank than SATs?

OK…here’s the deal with safety schools (especially when int’l students are involved).

Safety schools don’t usually give need-based aid to int’l students. Safety schools generally don’t have a lot of money.

HOWEVER…as I mentioned to you before, there are safety schools that would give you big merit for your stats…those would cost your parents much less than $28k per year.

And is there any college that put more emphasis on GPA and Class rank than SATs?

Not really ones that will give you money. There are ones that will admit you, but expect you to pay all costs.

Are you in Greece, or in another country? Wherever you are, you need to read through the information at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.info/) and then make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to where you are. There are two in Greece [EducationUSA - Find an Advising Center](http://www.educationusa.info/Greece) These counselors are expert at helping students find good places to study in the US, and they can guide you through the whole process. They should be familiar with your secondary school, and they can tell you which colleges and universities in the US have admitted students like you in recent years. They will know which places have given good financial aid.

Don’t count on being able to come to the US to study. As an international applicant, you do not have a “safety school” here. Your safeties are in your home country.

Ok I get it… and I know you’re right. But what about college of wooster?

Well I still want to chance… Especially for Middlebury, Oberlin and Grinnell
I know Dartmouth is a reach…High Reach, but anyway…

Also, I had interview with representatives of Oberlin and Grinnell… I got really good comments and one told me <>, hope that counts.

I come from Greece.
I have visited Fulbright Counselor and really helped me in the application proceess…
About Greek Universities, I can easily get to any department of any university I want… so I can take this as my safety…

The think is that I want to get away of the strict Greek educational system that focuses on hard exams, core curriculum, tones of readind and NO research…Anyway, that’s another story…

**Anyone that knows well US colleges to chance me for these 5 colleges?**Please…
