Thank you.

what does it mean if they're in the top 3?

I dont know a huge amount about frats yet (ill try to look at it some over the summer)... if my older bro was a Kappa Sig at SMU does that help my chances for Kappa Sig at Duke?

lollerskates, could you elaborate? are you asking what it "means" in terms of how "cool" you are or something? :P

drumndukie, yes that will help but it's not a sure thing.

to add to what i just wrote, it would help more if he had been a kappa sig at Duke, but it will still help that he was a kappa sig somewhere.

So it seems like SAE and Kappa Sig are no longer "on campus" frats? How related to the university are they?

Yeah, those are the most "popular" or "elite" or whatever you would want to call them. Though you will find awesome people in every frat and sorority. And selective living groups. And of course independents. :)

SAE and Kappa Sig are not related to the university and are off campus, but still remain the most popular. They don't have to do stuff like community service like other frats.

i mean what factors are you considering when you make those lists? how did they make the top 3?
and what does it mean socially if you're in a "top" sorority or frat? how does it effect your social life differently than being in any other soror/frat?

Do freshman usually join sororities, and is it okay to join sophomore year?

Just a warning--

They may be considered the "most elite," but all I know is that every girl finds out during her first week on campus that SAE = Sexual Assault Expected. Don't do it if you don't want that rep. Every single girl I know has heard it.

For sororities, the top four are in stone - I know girls in all of them. Some are great girls, while ost are the "party hard," go out weeknights all the time type, etc....Sororities are honestly more about where you fit than which one is "best." You'll find out which group of girls you get along with best during recruitment. The ranking of the bottom half (more like the other 5) depends on who you know in which one and are more subjective (in terms of how "popular" you think they are).

both posters forgot to even mention SigEP... that cant be too good for SigEp

I should clarify that even though the "rankings" are widely known, I would encourage those thinking of rushing a greek organization not to focus solely on the "popularity ranking." Because yeah although the "core four" sororities are supposedly the most "coveted" or whatever, and a lot of freshman guys would love to get a bid from kappa sig or whatever, I mean obviously you want to make sure you connect with the people in the frat or sorority you want to join. Lex is right in that "popular" is subjective . . . obviously different types of people will want to join different groups. So yeah, even though everyone knows the "ranking' or whatever, it really doesn't matter as long as you like the people in your frat/sorority.

Also don't be afraid to go independent or rush a selective living group if you don't feel that joining a frat or sorority is your "thing" or whatever.

Oh and sweetsami, rush is second semester freshman year, but people also join sophomore year. There's also "informal" rush for sororities which is when a girl hangs out with them so much that she just kind of joins even though it's not during rush.

Also don't forget about traditionally African American frats and sororities. There is also a co-ed service frat that doesn't have housing, and a couple non-panhel sororities, though I don't know the names of any of them.

I've read at Duke that not all fraternities have housing

they don't - some have been kicked off campus, and some just don't have housing, but most do

It is important to note that it is each pledge class that comes in every year that makes the sorority or fraternity. After this year's rush, Pi Phi picked up the hottest and best pledge class and is still the undisputed queen of sororities. However, Tri-Delt, which a lot of people in this blog ranked second, did not end up with the best girls this year. Rather, Kappa moved up and is now probably the closest to contending with Pi Phi. As for frats, Kappa Sig only got 11 random kids and Delta Sig got crap even after snap bids. SAE, Sigma Nu, and KA share the best group of freshmen guys this year and will probably emerge as the top 3 fraternities in three years. My point is, the people who join these fraternities and sororities each year are different, and as a result the reputations of greek organizations will inevitably change.
