Green Card? Citizenship? What?

I am currently living in South America, but will be moving to the US next year.
Although I already have Canadian permanent residency, I want to go to college in the US. My question is, without going into too much detail, what does a green card grant me as a student? Do I get financial aid, or do I have to be a citizen to apply for aid?
I am not very familiar with the process in America, so all help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a green card (American) you are treated the same as a US citizen for admissions and financial aid.

Great! Thank you, ‘swimcatsmom’

Do you have an American or a Canadian permanent resident visa?

With a US green card you can apply for financial aid like a US Citizen, but not with a Canadian green card.

barium:
I have a Canadian ‘green card’, but I will soon be getting an American green card.
In terms of financial aid, can you give me some examples of where I can apply for this aid?
Thanks in advance.

Once you have your US permanent residence (green card) you will be eligible to file the FAFSA which determines whether or not you qualify for certain grants, loans, and work study supported by the US federal government.
However, colleges and universities in Canada are often significantly less expensive than their peer institutions in the US. You need to find out how much it would cost for you to complete your university-level studies there.
