One of the victims, Yevgeniy Marshalik, 19, was a NYU student who was a volunteer auxiliary police officer. My heart goes out to him and his family and friends.

wow. RIP....

Crazy stuff happens.

It's very sad and disturbing. My son who is a NYU Stern sophomore writes:

This is ridiculous. This is RIGHT in my neighborhood, and an NYU student my age is among those dead. It's weird to imagine a gunfight happening around places like the Village Lantern, which is a common NYU hangout.

Let's hope that more of this does not continue. My heart does go out to the victims.

This is very sad, but let's remember that this young man was killed because of his role as a volunteer police officer; he was not just a random guy on the street. We are fully confident in sending our daughter to NYU next year. We still know that the Village is the safest precinct in Manhattan, and that there are far more dangerous cities in the US than NYC. Unfortunately these freakish crimes happen once in a while, but we mustn't let that stop us from proceeding with our lives. Let us go forth with compassion and fearlessness.

This is nothing that should make anyone feel uneasy about hanging out in The Village or going to NYU. As I said, crazy stuff happens that no one really can prepare for. This is one of those things.

i saw 1 block away, and I heard the gun shots. It was really scary. I hope that he is in a better place now.
